Questions for a Fic

I am shortly going to be starting on Part 2 of my Fic "A New
Beginning", part 1 is archived at :

I would be grateful if some knowlegable person(s) could answer a
few questions (off list). Basically what I need to check is :

1) If driving from Iowa (somewhere rural in the middle of the
state) to Southern California by the most direct route which
Interstate would you take and is two-three days a realistic
journey time (I'm assuming that speeding tickets would not be an
issue (military vehicle), minimal sleeping/rest breaks)?

2) Would a woman in her late teens/early twenties who was 5 weeks
pregnant be given a pelvic examination? I thought that she would
as a matter of course but my sister (who has had two children in
thr UK) said that she would not be given the exam under the NHS
regualtions in this country due to the risk of causing a
misscarriage. What is the case in the US?

3) In the UK pregnant women will usually recieve 'Bounty Packs'
(essentially packs containing free samples of pregnacy/baby
related products from companies) via their GP, maternity ward or
Mid-Wife. Is there anything similar in the US?

Also, for a later part, would anyone be willing to give me
details of Lamaze (sp?) classes? I have an idea how the
non-technical side will go but want to get some details to make
it more realistic.
