I recently read (and laughed at) an on-line piece that described the most commonly used cliches used in Xena/Gabrielle fanfiction(like they often do it in a cave while waiting out a storm, or during an Amazon festival). I was inspired to create a list of the most commonly seen cliches used in Buffy/Willow fanfiction. This is just based on my own experience, but I'm sure that you've noticed them too. Enjoy, Kirayoshi The Most Commonly Used Cliches in Buffy/Willow Fanfiction Written by Kirayoshi The most commonly used points in the series run to go off-canon and have Buffy and Willow get together are; * Second season, when Angel was Angelus * Third season, when Angel was considering leaving Buffy * Fourth season, when Buffy and Willow became roommates * Fourth season, when Oz left, and Buffy comforted Willow * Post-fourth season, usually after Willow and Tara break up. In all situations, Buffy and Willow confess that they have loved each other since the first time they ever met. In fifty percent of all first-time stories, Willow accidently casts a spell that brings them together. Once the spell wears off, Buffy and Willow decide to let things stand. Before the episode "Hush", Buffy is the aggressor. After "Hush"(and Willow meeting Tara), Willow may be the aggressor. Oz is usually blase about Willow leaving him. Ditto Angel when he finds out about Buffy and Willow. Tara is usually the one to leave Willow, realizing that Willow belongs to Buffy. She usually remains in the story as a friend of Willow's and starts a relationship with another cast member. Riley usually acts like a bratty kid when Buffy tries to leave him. In the majority of fictions, the Scooby Gang is either cool with Buffy and Willow being together, or they already knew about it before Buffy and Willow did. Even Giles usually seems to notice. Joyce is usually okay with Buffy coming out of the closet; at least Willow is a nice girl, and not a vampire. The general wisdom is that once Joyce dealt with Buffy being the Slayer, being in love with another woman was an non-issue. The Rosenbergs usually threaten to disown Willow. Sheila never pronounces Buffy's name right. The most heinous thing that the Rosenbergs have done in in Shyfox's "Psych Ward Blues", when Ira arranged for Buffy to be taken to an LA psych ward to be brainwashed. Despite the fact that they're both girls, there have been a surprising amount of pregnancies between these two(Two Worlds, Sappho's Spell, Militat Omnes Amans). Their children are always girls; no Y-chromosomes. There's usually no fuss about same-sex weddings between the two. More often than not, they opt for a Wiccan Handfasting. In the majority of third-season fics, it is indicated that Buffy was at one point attracted to Faith, if not involved with her. In most post-"Who Are You" stories, Faith seeks redemption. In most stories post-"Hush", Buffy acts jealous of Tara, realizing her feelings for Willow too late. Even in stories set in Season Three, when Willow was just above the pencil-floating stage, Willow's magic is much stronger in the fanfic. The series seems to be finally catching up with the fanfics. In most longer stories, there is more than one girl/girl scenario. In Dreiser's "It Starts With Faith", Buffy and Willow are the supporting story, behind Faith and Cordelia; in later chapters, Kate Lochley and Jenny Calendar have developed an attraction. Faith and Cordy are also together in Honoured Fool's stories. I myself introduced a new Slayer named Sandra as a romantic interest for Tara in "Somewhere I Have Never Travelled", while in Shadowmage's "Realms", after Willow and Tara break up, Tara falls for Faith. The most common menage-a-tois are Buffy/Willow/Faith and Buffy/Willow/Tara. In most kinky stories, Buffy is the submissive.("Yeah," as Willow said in "Doppleganger", "Me and Oz play Mistress of Pain every night.") This is especially true in any story that crosses over with the Wishverse, or has an appearance by VampWillow. In Angst stories, Willow is much more likely to die than Buffy. Usually before she and Buffy can get together. In about half of all Buffy/Willow stories, Joyce and Giles become a couple. END Download NeoPlanet at http://www.neoplanet.com |
