There is the famous line about Uncle Rory; "The man loves his Schnapps."
Also I remember some vague references to his dad drinking, it was
probably assumed that his mother also drinks. I can't remember anything
about her one way or another.

I don't remember them stating an age, but his name was mentioned once
and it had a German/Northern European sound to it. So I would have to
guess he was turned somewhere around 12th-13th centuries.

The only problem is I could swear I remember him talking about some
event he had seen that took place long before that.

The way I see it vamps can be effected by mundane things: Spike and
Angel were both effected by tasers(stun guns), Spike has repeatedly
gotten drunk(though he sobers up faster than a human) and Angel was
effected by that Ecstasy like drug last season.
