Giles stared in disbelief at the telephone in front of him not daring
to accept what he had just heard. He removed his glasses and sat for
a moment with his head in his hands before reaching for the phone to
make the call he had dreaded since arriving on these shores.

"Hello, Buffy?"
"Oh, hi Giles."
"I've just had a disturbing call. I'm afraid our time together has
come to an end."
"What? Why?" Buffy blinked in disbelief.
"This'd be a lot easier face-to-face..." With a 'pop' Giles dropped
out of the telephone handset. Buffy screamed. "Calm down," Giles
said, in the face of logic. "Electricity is just my medium."
"Your medium?" Buffy quavered.
"Yes," Giles affirmed. "I can finally tell you who I really am. I'm
a debugger for Yggdrasil, the world tree."
Buffy blinked. "Tree?"
Giles nodded. "The whole world is run on a computer system called
Yggdrasil. I'm a system debugger, or Druid. My real name is Verdandi,
God of Norns."
"Uhuh," Buffy stammered.
"The demons you've been facing are bugs in the system, constructs
given form so that they can be discovered and debugged."
Buffy frowned. "I don't understand."
"Of course you don't, you're not a Power. But believe me when I say
that of all my debugging tools, you're my favourite, and I will never
forget you."
"I'm a... debugging tool?" Buffy struggled to understand the concept.
"Of course." Giles gestured to Mr. Pointy. "That's your system
interrupt. Anyway, I had a call from the Greater Power, and I must
return to the System. Never forget," Giles looked her up and down, "I
think you've the greatest user interface of all my programs." He
vanished.
"Bye," Buffy breathed.
