Y'see, here's my problem.
Between the stories I'm still in the middle of
writing, plus a few other ideas that crop up in my mind, and the old dreaded RL,
I have more story ideas than I have time to write them. So I'm putting up
one idea I had recently but was unable to flesh out, and setting it upas a
challenge. The Challenge is called...
The Devil's Best Trick.
The title comes from an obscure quotation; The
Devil's best trick was to make everyone believe that he didn't exist. I
don't know who said it first, but Kevin Spacey quoted it in "The Usual
Suspects".
The set-up is as follows;
A powerful demon covets the power of the Hellmouth,
but knows that the Hellmouth is guarded by the Slayer. So the demon comes
up with a plan to gain that power for himself; travel back in time to, say,the
Dark Ages, and unleash a powerful magic that would strip all mankind of its
knowledge of Hellmouths, vampires and demons. As far as humanity is
concerned, these creatures never existed. No magic at all exists, as far
as the world is aware. He then returns to the present, and begins his
conquest of the Hellmouth.
Because of the demon's influence, the Watcher's
Council doesn't exist. Slayers may have been called, but went through
their lives unaware of their power or their destiny. And vampires are
still a threat.
Olympic Gold Medal-winning figure skater Buffy
Summers meets a computer programmer named Willow Rosenberg...
And that meeting stirs something in
Buffy.
Do Buffy and Willow establish the same bond they
share on the show? Will Buffy encounter other members of the Scooby
Gang? How does she learn the truth about vampires, or her ability to face
them? How can she fulfill her destiny as the Slayer if there is no
information whatsoever to guide her?
This is my challenge. Who will take
it?
