Re: FIC: Buffy: The Musical, B/W style
HD,
(Hmm, I know that name. Either you've got an interesting taste in
pseudonyms, or German politicians are a lot more sophisticated than
their US counterparts.)
Oh, well done. Hey Joss, if we can't get B/W, could we at least give
Willow her own "I Will Remember You", like in here? It would give all
that subtext Aly's playing an extra poignancy. (of course, I'm
convinced we CAN get to B/W, so feel free to push this request aside&)
The sacrifice=another chance theme is well explored, calling up echoes
of "Bargaining". And I loved the quote list intro (I can almost hear a
piano version of the Nerf Herder theme playing underneath).
I particularly liked the use of "Why don't we start with 'Hi, I'm
Buffy'?" When I did one of these for the end of a letter, I included a
selection and then realized that I had to use the "WttH" quote. It's
the "start with" that gets mein retrospect it seems like an
unconscious acknowledgement that we're telling an evolving story here,
that the show isn't about the monster of the week but about character
relationships and growth. And of all the relationships, the primary one
(even if one chooses to strip it entirely of any romantic subtext) is
Buffy and Willow's.
I was going to say that your only flaw was that there was no explanation
for the singing (as there was in the actual ep), but you're just using
musicality as a storytelling technique, which is the way it's usually
done, so I rescind that.
Thanks again for a fine read.

PSI think what really makes the "Choices" quote is the awkward little
snort Aly gives in response. Willow doesn't just ignore it and go into
talking about being a "bad-ass wicca", as the transcripts
suggestshe's touched and embarassed at Buffy's saying what's in her
heart, too, and thus has to segue onto something else.
Program note (for U.S. viewers): You can see for yourself when
"Choices" airs today on FX (7 pm, ET/PT).
