Even beyond Spike bringing a date, I can concede that Buffy was hurt by
the absence of the relationship-it had been a comfort zone, a temprary
anaesthetic, and, on some level, she misses it.

But she doesn't have the slightest interest in going back. Much praise
to David Solomon, whom I've dissed before; unlike Doug Petrie's work
last week, there were no twitches or squinting in Buffy's manner, nor
any pauses as she searched for words. As a result, I never got the
impression that she was repressing feelings and making A Speech, as I
did in "As You Were". She honest about being a little jealous, and the
loss of her Spikey drug of choice hurts, but she knows she did the right
thing and doesn't regret it.

Never did I get the impression that she was having to hold herself back
from dragging him into the broom closet for a quickie. She was slightly
uncomfortable-but hardly much more than when she ran into Scott Hope
while campaigning for Homecoming Queen.

Spike himself seems to know this-when he asks her for the second "it
hurts" and she gives it to him, he thanks her, as if acknowledging that
they're not getting back together, so he's glad she gave him the
self-esteem boost.

All I can say is, she seemed more likely to run off with Riley last week
than she did with Spike this ep. Over and out-I have officially moved
from horribly depressed to smugly over-confident.
