Re: Fanfic preferences
My two dinars worth;
The main reason I gravitate toward Buffy and Willow is because their
relationship has always been the strongest, most developed on the show.
Their friendship has weathered boyfriends, girlfriends, addiction, not to
mention the terrors of the Hellmouth, and is still strong.
I tend to read other pairings if I don't have too many problems with them,
such as some early Buffy/Angel(set before season four), Buffy/Xander(I look
at them and say to myself, She could do worse), and most canon couples.
With one notable exception, and I believe most people on this list will agree
with me on this; Buffy/Spike. I've actually struggled through a few B/S
shipper stories, and in every event either the writer mistakes Spike for a
blonde Cockney Angel, or they just enjoy seeing Buffy suffer. In both events
they easily forget one basic fact about Spike; HE'S EVIL!!!!!!!!! What part
of 'evil' don't they get? Spike is the show's best recurring villain, he
should be written as such. He's the Big Bad, not Buffy's Bitch!
As for crossovers, I enjoy them, but tend to be selective. I always said
that crossovers work best when they share some common ground; similar themes,
characters, settings, that sort of thing. BtVS works well with properties
like Forever Knight(both have vampires), Charmed(both have witches),
Gargoyles(themes of magic and heroism) and X-Files(darkness and mystery).
However, sometimes a crossover will come along that surprises me. On the
'Extra Flamey' site, I read one called 'The Bishop and the Two Witches', in
which Willow and Tara hooked up with Bishop Blackie Ryan, a lead character
from the novels of author Andrew M. Greeley. Blackie is a Chicago priest(in
later novels a bishop), who is often sent by his boss, Cardinal Sean Cronin
to solve mysteries and handle delicate matters for the Chicago church. In
this story, Blackie was sent to investigate a miracle in a Chicago Starbuck's
during an alternate faith convention. His search takes him to Sunnydale
where he meets Willow and Tara, and helps them defeat a demon that has taken
possession of Buffy. Surprisingly entertaining story.
In conclusion, my reading habits regarding Buffy fanfic tend to be similar to
most others on the lists, but sometimes, I'll discover something odd or
unusual that works out.
