An Apology from Anne-Lise, a challenge from Dan
Okay, those of you who got a mail from buffywantswillow containing
something from Anne-Lise entitled "FIC: Remembered Liaison [1/1]" were
probably saying "huh?"
Because it was a Faith/Dawn fic, which is too OT to post here (unless
there was also going to be some B/W in it, or something).
And of that group, those of you who are on the Faithful list or are
regular visitors to Wynd Gyrl's site probably said "WTF?? Anne-Lise
didn't write this; this is Wynd Gyrl's 'I Have Never Been To Boston'!!"
Which makes no sense, since Anne-Lise doesn't plagiarize.
So, being in the WTF group, I deleted the post and wrote Anne-Lise and
discovered what had happened was she was trying to forward the Wynd Gyrl
fic to a friend and also to post the latest chapter of "Coming Apart",
and she managed to get it crossed up. In her own words, "I screwed it
up, I'm sorry."
Anyway, this got me thinking. (Always a bad sign, I know...) Sure, the
"woman writes letters to two men, and puts them by mistake into the
wrong envelopes" plot device is so old that when Agatha Christie used it
in "And Then There Were None" (1940), she had the character say it was
like something that only happens in novels, since it was that cliched
even then. But heck, "True Love" is a cliche, too, so why should this
stop us? And anyway, we've just seen that this sort of mix-up does
still happen in RL, so it's not so hokey after all...
So herewith "The Miscommunication Challenge":
Write a fic where Buffy or Willow tries to express two different things
to two different people (be it in letters, notes, or email or whatever)
and manages to send them to the wrong people. You know, Buffy writes
Willow pledging true love and Spike telling him that there are too many
reasons why they can never be together, and then mixes them up. Or
Willow writing to Buffy and Tara. Or Buffy writing to Willow and Xander
or Willow and Giles or what have you. And then ensuing stuff ensues, as
per usual :)
I think it may work best if both letters avoid the use of salutations
and proper names and the author just writes to "you", but do it however
you think is right.
Sounds like fun, assuming that I manage to send this challenge to the
lists, and not my dad... (unless he can write femslash, lol)
