OT: Just a little info on a certain game, and asking a question

I guess I'll start with the question I want to ask,
since the game info contains spoilers on Square's
latest release, Kingdom Hearts.

My question is about an original character that I want
to use in a fic I'm going to try and write. I figured
it would help if I wrote a character profile, since I
don't want it to come off as a Mary Sue. The question
is this: does anyone know if the shock of witnessing a
traumatic event could cause someone to become mute? I
just want to know, because I want to make my character
mute (for part of the story, anyways) and wanted a
plausible reason for it happening.

Okay, if you're still reading, I'm going to assume
that you don't care about spoilers for this game. I
just wanted to tell everyone that a character named
Squall (originally from Final Fantasy 8) is voiced in
this game by none other than David Boreanaz! He
didn't do a very good job reading his lines though...
it sounded like he was thinking, "I'm going to kill my
agent." *lol*
