THE DAY A STAR FELL DOWN FROM THE SKY


Buffy and Willow's patrol had been eventless so far--the only notable
exception being the little racoon going about its business near the
abandoned factory. It almost scared Willow to death with its sudden
appearance out of a heap of wooden boxes. Humans and animal critically
gazed at each other, and then all went on their way.
Said way finally led the two girls to Shady Hill cemetery, where they
sat down side by side on a strip of grass.

Buffy leaned back and let her gaze wander over the cloudless sky and
the millions of stars shining down on them. Noticing the blonde's
sudden interest in the skies, Willow pointed to a star that was
particularly bright.
"That's Vega over there," she explained, "The brightest star in the
northern hemisphere during summer..."
Buffy sat up and moved behind the redhead. She then embraced Willow
from behind, and peeked over her outstretched arm. That was a beauty
of a star, alright, but she was more interested in the beauty right in
front of her right now.
"Beautiful," she whispered and breathed on Willow's neck. While Willow
continued to explain the stars and their constellations, Buffy
observed how the hair at the nape of her girlfriend's neck
straightened up.
"...and that one over there, shaped like the letter w, is
Cassiopeia..."
Buffy's hands began to wander over the witch's belly, up to her
breasts. She then kissed Willow's neck, and the redhead fell silent.
Just as Buffy began to have some nasty thoughts about where this could
lead them, Willow spoke again.

"I prayed on my knees to heaven above
for someone to hold, for someone to love.
Then you came along--and right from the start
you gave me your friendship, then conquered my heart,
thus healing my long-term emotional scars--
and for that I will give you the stars."

Buffy was speechless for a moment. She hadn't noticed before that her
girlfriend was a poet. And that was so wonderful about their
relationship: every day brought something new.
"It's...breathtaking," she finally said and quickly placed a kiss on
Willow's mouth.
The two girls sat under the starry sky and were silent again for a
while.
"Would you really do that?" Buffy then asked.
"What?"
"Give me the stars."
"Oh yeah."
"Show me," Buffy teased.
Instead of an answer, Willow closed her eyes. Buffy noticed that her
friend's breathing calmed, and then she could feel a tickling
sensation in her own neck.
Before she could worry what was causing this, the sensation ceased.
A movement at the edge of her field of vision caught Buffy's
attention. Tensing instinctively because she first thought that it
might be a vampire, she immediately relaxed again. Her slayer sense
would have tingled if someone had tried to sneak up on them.
But there definitely was a movement--Buffy could see that. It wasn't
somewhere around them, however, it was above them! One of the stars
had begun to move, slowly first, almost imperceptibly. But now, it
became more and more apparent that it was in fact moving, and growing
in size. Buffy began to worry. Whatever that was, it was heading
directly for them. Then the star, or whatever it was, described a
circle in the sky, moving sideways now. It still came closer and
closer, but it wasn't growing anymore. Instead, it was shrinking.
Finally, she could see a glow moving over the ground in the distance.
The star was very low now--and then it was there. It came to a halt at
a distance of about an arm's length of where the girls were sitting.
The little light hovered about four feet in the air and emanated a
steady bluish light that illuminated their surroundings. Curiously,
Buffy reached for it. It felt warm and her fingertips tingled a bit as
she touched it, but the feeling wasn't unpleasant.
"Isn't that beautiful?" Willow asked, and opened her eyes again.
"Yeah, it is. Is it...?"
"A star."
Buffy didn't reply.
"How can you do that?" she finally asked.
"Oh, the only trick is getting the balance between energy containment
and mass reduction right...and you so didn't want to know that,
right?" the witch answered.
"You must've become very powerful..." Buffy began when Willow
interrupted her. "...through you! Only through you. Your love is the
source of my power," she explained to her girlfriend.
"I...love...you," Buffy answered as she bent over to the redhead and
placed a kiss on her mouth after every word.
"I love you too."
Willow snuggled up to Buffy and they lay there for a long while
without talking, just enjoying the magic of the moment.

Finally, Buffy had to move gently, since her left leg felt as if a
whole colony of ants was throwing a parade on it. Willow grumbled
disapprovingly and sat up.
When her leg felt normal again, Buffy stood up and offered her hand to
the hacker, helping her up.
"Let's go home," she suggested.
"Okay."
Hand in hand they walked away, and immediately, the little star began
to follow them.
"It's following us," Buffy remarked.
"It's yours now. Your star. It'll follow you, wherever you go. It'll
light you the way...as long as you live...probably much longer, a
couple billion years in fact..." Willow explained.
"You're my star," Buffy simply stated.
Willow didn't know what to say after that confession. They remained
silent all the way home, and Buffy's little star lit their way.

Half a world away, a new day was dawning--a day that from now on would
be known as the day a star fell down from the sky.
