Ivy,

Yes, Giles and Willow go into the costume shop, Ethan appears, and then
Giles tells Willow to get gone. But at that point, Ethan is smirking
and cracking jokes ("...chunky and creamy. No, wait, that's peanut
butter..") and definitely *not* cowering, because the Giles he remembers
was so dedicated to forgetting the things that Ethan and "Ripper" used
to do that he's sworn off violence completely.

So Willow goes, having only seen a very confident Ethan, and *then*
Giles smacks his ass all over the shop (much to Ethan's painful
surprise). And, as I mentioned, Ethan stands firm all through "The Dark
Age", and Willow never sees him in "Band Candy" or "A New Man".

Hence the nitpick.
