Buffy. Buhhh-fee. B-U-F-F-Y. Period.

Grr,
I've missed some emails (what else is new?) and I've just discovered, to
my horror, that the idea that Buffy's first name isn't Buffy has been
put forth.
This is untrue. It is extremely untrue. "Elizabeth" is never, not
once, mentioned. It is complete, 100% fanon, utterly unsupported by
the text.

Pardon the vein popping in my temple, but this is one of my two pet
peeves about fan reaction to the show. (The other is people saying
that Spike's "I like this world" speech in "Becoming, Part 2" somehow
indicates that Spike is special or a nice vampire or soulless vamps can
be redeemed or vamps don't ordinarily want to end the world or whatever.
Also demonstratable bull, as specifically shown both in that scene and
later in the ep when Spike does in fact abandon Buffy and allow the
world to be sucked into hell.) My sheer, obstinate fury at these
persistent canards is such that I have written and archived standard
rants on the subject, for use when needed.

This is such a time, and I've included it below.

Buffy is NOT "Elizabeth", dammit!!

by Dan Spector

In 144 episodes of "Buffy" there have been hundreds, probably thousands,
of references to Buffy, yet she has never been called "Elizabeth". The
only time the word "Elizabeth" has been mentioned was in Helpless, when
Angel says Robert Browning wrote "Sonnets from the Portuguese" as a gift
for Elizabeth Barrett, Nothing to do with Buffy, no mention that he's
giving her the Browning because her name is also Elizabeth, nothing like
that.

It's never mentioned, not at all. When Principal Flutie looks over her
Hemery High records in the premiere, they say "Buffy Summers". When
Miss French takes over Biology as a substitute in "Teacher's Pet" and
has to look at the class roster to find out who she is, it says "Buffy".
When Moloch pulls up her school records in "I Robot, You Jane" or when
Spike looks up her dorm room in "The Initiative" or when Tara does the
same in "Hush", it always says "Buffy", never "Elizabeth".

When the cops interrogate her in "Ted" and "Becoming, Part 2" (and put
out an APB on her) and "Consequences", nobody calls her Elizabeth. When
Snyder finks her out to the cops, he says "Buffy Summersif there's
trouble, she behind it."
When Joyce is angry and upset and disappointed and grounding Buffy or
telling her if she leaves the house she can't come back, she never calls
her "Elizabeth", When Hank tells her the divorce was all her fault, he
calls her "Buffy". When Dawn teases, whines, tries to irritate or mocks
her sister, she never goes "Eeeelizzzaaaabethhhhh" as bratty kids will
do. When Willow tries to get her to buck up and be strong and trust
that people love her, she never calls her anything but "Buffy". When
Angelus and Spike and Glory taunt her as a "little girl" they never try
to make her feel childish by pulling out "Elizabeth".

And when she's dead and buried and rotting in the ground, the tombstone
says "Buffy Anne Summers". If they were going to be so formal as to
include the middle name, they would have included the full first name,
which they did, because "Buffy" is it. There is no "Elizabeth". If she
were Elizabeth Anne Summers, the headstone would have said "Elizabeth
Anne Summers" or "Buffy Summers" but not "Buffy Anne Summers."

Plenty of people have a name that is a diminuitive of another name as
their full legal name. Baseball stars Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays,
for just two real-life examples. You can have a name that's short for
"Elizabeth" without actually being named "Elizabeth"

just ask Eliza Patricia Dushku.

Buffy Anne Summers is the girl's full and legal name.
