PART ONE

There are locks on the doors
And chains stretched across all the entries to inside
There's a gate and a fence
And bars to protect from only God knows what lurks outside

Willow led her through the apartment that would be her home. It was
nice. Off-white walls that were the exact polar opposite of what
she'd been looking at for fourteen years. Pictures sat on top of
a
mantle. Most of them where of Kat and Willow. One sat off to the
side. A picture off the gang a month before her birthday that caused
everything in her life to change.

"You okay?" Willow put a hand on Buffy's shoulder. She
felt the
muscle twitch underneath and quickly dropped her hand to her side.

"Yeah. Of course." Buffy hadn't said much since they
left the
prison's gates. The four hour drive had been made in almost
complete
silence. Only broken when Buffy ordered her lunch at a diner outside
Sunnydale.

"Your room's at the end of the hall. It was a storage room
so it
isn't decorated. We can decorate it whenever you want to."

"Okay."

"Great! I'll let you get unpacked. Kat should be home soon
so...I'll get dinner ready." She gave Buffy a little shove
in the
direction of the bedroom before heading to the kitchen.

Who stole your heart
The smile from your face
The innocence the light from your eyes
Who took away the part so essential to the whole
Left you a hollow body
Skin and bone

Buffy entered the room slowly. Willow told the truth it wasn't
decorated but it had the essentials. A bed and a closet.

She sat the garbage bag that held her things on the bed. A few paint
brushes and pencils. A small sketch pad. The diaries she'd
wrote in
during her time and most importantly a small stack of pictures.

She pulled the pictures out. Some of the pictures were the same as
on Willows mantel but not all. The pictures captured every important
moment of Kats life. Her first tooth. Her first step. Her first
day of kindergarten. Her first day of being a teenager. She'd
missed out on almost every first of Kat's life except the most
important one. The day she was born. The day that kept repeating
over and over again everytime she tried to sleep.

Buffy heard noises coming from the kitchen. Taking a deep breath she
stood up on slightly unsteady legs and realized she had started
crying. So many emotions had been ricocheting through her head since
they'd unstraped her from the table.

Joy.

Happiness.

Sadness.

Fear.

She heard Kat laughing from the kitchen and then Willow joined in and
her heart broke a little more. Kat's laughing stopped when she
entered and Willow shot her a warning glance that didn't go
unnoticed.

"That was quick." Willow was the first to break the silence.
The
tension was radiating all over the place. She knew how both of them
felt about their relationship but didn't want to get in the way
to
much. They'd have to work it out themselves.

"Well I don't have much stuff." Buffy glanced at Kat who
was staring
at her. She was wondering what was going through her daughters
beautiful head. Was it close to what was going through her head?

"That's okay. Kat and I'll take you shopping
tomorrow."

"You know what...I already ate at Giles. I'm gonna go to my
room.
I'll see you in the morning Aunt Willow." Kat kissed Willow
on the
cheek before heading out the door.

"Katherine Eileen Liam get back in here!" Well she
hadn't planned to
interfere but watching Buffy's face fall broke her heart.

"What!" Kat slammed the door open. When Willow used her
full name
she knew she was in trouble.

"It's okay Willow." Buffy didn't want the two to be
fighting because
of her.

"No it's not. Kat you won't give your mother. She
brought you into
this world and she can take you out..." As soon as she said that
she
wished she hadn't. Buffy flinched and looked down at the floor.

"I bet you'd do it. Just like you did that other
person!" Kat
shouted at her.

"What!" Willow was mortified. She'd never seen Kat act
like this.
Normally the girl was so quiet she hardly heard a peep from
her. "You know that's not true. I explained what
happened."

"I don't believe you."

"That's enough. Go to your room. Now!" Willow pointed
at the door
but Kat didn't move. She was staring daggers at Buffy.

"No that's okay. I'll go." Buffy stood up and went
through the door
before Willow could object.

You see I've been climbing stairs but mostly stumbling down
I've been reaching high always losing ground
You see I've been reaching high but always losing ground
You see I've conquered hills but I still have mountains to climb
