Quindo Ma,

My local paper (Wilmington Delaware) carried a story
on this this morning (Sunday, 7-2-00) According to the
paper, a few lesbian partnerships sued the state for
denying them benefits granted married couples and won
in the state supreme court. The court said that the
state had to grant them the same types of benefits but
left it up to the state to figure out how to go about
it. The state came up with civil partnerships. The
benefits are for VT state only - it is not the same as
marriage as defined by the state. But the couples can
register and get state benefits, not federal.

A good first step.
