Subject: [buffywantswillow] FanFic - Soul Mating Preface
Okay, in lieu of a finished chapter of Intervention, I am posting the
preface to
a series I will probably alternate with it. This was originally done as an
answer to a Fic Challenge on one of the Alyson Hannigan/Willow sites, though
I
can't remember which one anymore. It's been sitting on my hard drive for
two
months now (I started it before the inspiration for Intervention hit), and I
went back, polished it up a bit, and then hacked off the first couple of
paragraphs that were supposed to be the beginning of chapter 1. If you like
it,
lemme know, and I'll continue it once Ch IV is done for Intervention (the
block
has been removed, and the words are flowing... when the time presents
itself,
anyway).
Okay, standard series disclaimer ahead - since I think in long, drawn out
things... I seem to lack the ability to do a one-shot that isn't depressing.
Enough rant, here we go.
Disclaimer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is owned by Joss Whedon, Mutant
Enemy,
Warner Bros., and 20th Century Fox Television. I do not claim ownership; I
just
want to temporarily rent the characters.
Summary: Things happen differently when Buffy faces off against Angelus,
and
that's all I'm saying.
Spoilage: "Becoming."
Warning/Rating: This fic is rated R for violence, adult language, sexual
situations, and nudity.
Distribution: RTF version available. Considering I don't have time to
do a
website, just ask.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Soul Mating
FanFiction by Phoen Dusk
Preface
Very few things truly frightened Willow Rosenberg. She had come face to
face
with vampires. She had been hit on by a demon in a mechanical body. She
was
dating a werewolf. What she was preparing to do started setting off the
alarms
attached to her pulse monitor.
In theory, armed with the Orb of Thessula and the spell Ms. Calendar had
translated before her untimely demise, she could return Angel's soul to
dominance over the demon inhabiting his body. In practice, the forces at
play
in the ritual could easily kill her, with a good chance of shattering her
own
soul into little more than fragments as well. The odds of success were next
to
nil.
Enter: resolve face.
[\ Angel's Sanctorum /]
Buffy Summers was beginning to tire. Angelus was dueling her to a
near-standstill, and Acathla was beginning to awaken. Weighing the possible
options, the Slayer began to draw her vampiric opponent towards the demon's
opening maw. Feigning a greater fatigue than she felt, she watched as her
former lover grinned in confidence, towering above her as she intentionally
tripped backwards over her own feet.
"What's the matter, lover? Finally showing you can't hack it in a man's
world?" He thrust the tip of his blade towards her left ribcage, which she
seemed to barely dodge. "Don't worry about it, though. Soon you, not to
mention everyone else, will be trying to hack it in a demon's world."
[\ Sunnydale General Hospital /]
Willow had made one previous attempt at this spell, and was rudely
interrupted by Druscilla. The results of that attack had placed her in this
bed, where she was beginning to make a second attempt. Her confidence was
mediocre at best, but her determination was immeasurable. Pushing herself
into
the ritual, the young practitioner began calling forth the energies she
would
need.
Though she felt nothing at first, the redhead continued to speak the
words of
the translated text. She felt a small wisp of... something along her back,
but
attributed it to the air circulating within the hospital. The wisp
continued
its travels along her spinal cord, while the hacker continued to find a way
to
re-anchor Angel's soul.
Without warning, she felt a change overtake her, as the wisp detonated as
it
made contact with her brainstem. Willow felt the gypsy who had originally
cursed Angelus invade her corporeal form, and suddenly found herself shunted
out
of her own body. The redhead felt strangely unnerved by this turn of
events...
well, she was slightly upset at the fact that her soul was now in a place
similar to the one it had recently been spending time in: vast, white, and
utterly barren.
Looking about, the young witch did not expect to encounter anything. A
small, dark speck on the distant horizon piqued her curiosity, and she set
off
to investigate, noting the spot where she was still linked to her body on
the
physical plane.
[\ Angel's Sanctorum /]
The Slayer was only slightly worried now. She had been graced with a
second
wind, and had managed to battle Angelus back to where Acathla stood.
Stealing
one last, hope-filled look into his eyes, the Chosen One found no sign of
the
soul of the man she loved. He was gone, more than likely forever, replaced
by
this mockery of humanity bent on sending the world into one of the realms of
Hell.
"Not on my watch."
With the grasp of swordplay gleaned from Giles' expert tutelage and the
natural ability that came with being a Slayer, Buffy Summers disarmed her
vampiric opponent, spun once, and thrust the tip of the blade through both
demonic hearts. Angelus screamed in rage, vowing to inflict his vengeance
and
several dozen forms of pain and suffering before being sucked into the
rapidly
collapsing void.
[\ The White Plane /]
After what felt like an hour of travelling, though somewhere in the back
of
her mind she knew time operated differently here, Willow found herself
rapidly
approaching the dark anomaly she had spotted earlier. It was no longer
speck
sized, and it had taken on a very human shape. If comparative sizing was
still
applicable, from the back it was around six feet in height, with dark hair
and
broad shoulders concealed underneath a leather duster... in short, Angel.
"Hello, Willow."
An urgent wave of nausea and anxiety passed through the redhead's soul,
but
quickly subsided as she became aware that this was not the horrific monster
who
was trying to destroy the world. This was her friend, and the lover of her
best
friend, and she felt as though she had nothing to fear from him.
"Angel..."
"If I'm the reason your soul is here, I'm so sorry." If one's essence
can
sigh, Angel had discovered how to pull it off. He kept his gaze low,
fearing to
see the hatred and loathing that had emanated from Jenny Calendar as she
passed
through this place on her way to a plane of peace and comfort a few weeks
ago.
"Well, I am kinda here because of you, but not because 'evil vampire-you'
killed me. I'm kinda on a vacation from my body while a Hungarian gypsy
finishes re-cursing you." A tingle rippled throughout the soul of the
fledgling
witch, and she became aware that her body was now free for re-habitation.
Noticing that Angel was still before her, Willow went into mild confusion
mode.
"Um, did the spell go 'poof?' "
"No, the spell was completed correctly."
"Then howcome you're still, um, 'here?' "
"In order for the ritual to work, my body has to be on a physical plane,
not
a metaphysical one."
"But, the only way that would happen is if..."
"...Buffy already closed the gate Acathla was opening."
The redhead made a mental note to shed a tear for her friend once she had
returned, though she was already working on a way to resolve the situation.
"Ooh, I know. I can try to summon your body once I go back. Well, I'll
need to
set up a protective circle, just in case your soul doesn't show up right
away,
but..."
Not wishing to subject his former lover or the Slayerettes to any more
peril
on his behalf, Angel reached forward to emphasize his displeasure at the
idea.
"Willow, it's too..."
As the two souls touched, time halted, accelerated to near instantaneous
speeds, and resumed its normal course on The White Plane. In a brilliant
flash
of blinding light, the two travelers on the unblemished expanse disappeared,
beginning sojourns to new locations.

Well, if anyone knows where I might be going with this... hush. Don't spoil
the
surprise for those out there who enjoy letting the suspense build while
intentionally keeping themselves in the dark. As always, C&C appreciated
(even
negative stuff - just keep it to a lit match), and I will do my best to
reciprocate that. Really. I just need to get through 120+ pieces of unread
mail (mostly Fics) before I do so, though.
