Oh, 'Buffy!' More villains happily await

Joss Whedon, the ingenious writer behind WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, says fans can 
expect an exciting new nemesis for Buffy this year who will be "both bigger and smaller" than 
last season's government-created monster.

All right, that doesn't tell you much, but one of the keys to Buffy's success has been 
Whedon's ability to keep secrets. All he'll say is that the next big villain will be more along the 
lines of 1998's demonic mayor and less like last season's more impersonal mix of scientists 
and soldiers, which taxed the show both creatively and financially. 

"We had them hiding behind a bush," Whedon says. "They were the sorriest commandos on 
earth."

Having purposely separated Buffy from her friends last season, he'll use the new season to 
bring them back together. And in the center of the mix will be that witty British vampire, 
Spike. 

"More Spike. Spike makes everything better."

That's fine with the terrific young actor who plays Spike, James Marsters, who became a 
regular last season ? and now is looking forward to causing more trouble and even a 
possible romance. "In the beginning, I was afraid. . . . But it's like a roller coaster. A third of 
the way through, you just throw your head back and begin laughing. I told him, 'Joss, I'll do 
anything you want.'"

When you're working for a writer as good as Whedon, you'd be crazy to say anything else.
