Chapter 10: Battles Minor and Major
Joyce's eyes were on fire as they bore down on the unsuspecting goblins. The
wretched creatures never stood a chance. They'd struck just before sundown.
The plan, one of Al'x simpler ones, was hit them hard and hit them fast.
She cleaved the spear cleanly in half, and stood face to face with the
shivering creature, which just turned and ran.
"Stay," she commanded and fire spewed from her ring,
incinerating the creatures on contact.
"Joyce! Calm down!" Al'x ordered as he loosened his sword from
the corpse of a fallen goblin. Joyce looked up to face him. Their eyes
locked for just a fragment of a second, and for that instant, calm brown
eyes stared into fiery red ones. With a nod, the fire dimmed, but never
quite extinguished.
"Now fight!" he shouted after seeing the fires return to their
constant embers.

Cordelia carefully landed on the branch of an old oak tree and looked
around. She'd wandered through the forest looking for her ast'one for hours
and the sun was quickly setting. After the meeting, Stjar'a had retreated to
their quarters, but then left through the window in their bedroom when she'd
been making tea to sooth their nerves.
"Star?" she called out, the exhaustion obvious in her voice.
"Go away," came from somewhere within the green.
"Star, this is silly," she called out.
"I want to be alone," Stjar'a answered.
"You know I wont leave you alone. I'm persistent that way,"
Cordelia answered, hands on her hips. There was silence before Cordelia
spoke again. "What happened to cause you to hate them so much?" she asked.
"Remember when I told you I was an Moon elf?" Stjar'a asked from
her hiding place.
"Yeah, the day we first trained together," Cordelia answered
with a smile.
"Do you remember the day when we were fixing up the mansion and
you said that there was some Forrest Elf in me too?"
"Well yes, but what." Cordelia stopped speaking, her eyes
widening as the pieces fell into place. "Oh Star. I am so sorry. I didn't."
"It's alright, Cordy. There's no way you could have known."
Stjar'a said, emerging from the leaves.
"But, why didn't you tell me?" Cordelia asked as she tried to
hug her lover.
"How could I?"
Cordelia blinked. "You were afraid I'd hate you for it?" she
asked incredulously
"Yes," Stjar'a sniffled.
"Star, I love you. All of you," Cordelia said as she enveloped
her in a fierce hug.
"You don't despise."
"Hush. No, I don't. Your still the Stjar'a I fell in love with,"
Cordelia said in a reassuring voice.
"But .but what if they find out?" Stjar'a asked.
"Then we'll face it together, like everything else," Cordelia
answered as she wiped away her lover's tears.
"I'm so scared of losing you," Stjar'a whispered.
"You won't," Cordelia said in a reassuring voice. "Ever," she
added.

Piratess stepped into the throne room to find King Vitor kissing a young
girl. A human girl. This surprised her, but she didn't show it as she softly
cleared her throat, causing the pair to jump apart.
"Queen Piratess," Vitor greeted after he'd straightened his
clothing.
"I'll.ah, see you later," Amy said, kissed his cheek and jogged
past the Queen.
"Nice girl." Piratess commented.
"A Powerful Mage." Vitor said.
"But young and innocent," Piratess added.
"Why did you come here, Piratess?" Vitor asked.
"I've come to inform you whom of your warriors I'm going to
select as my general," she answered.
"Very well. Speak who is it, but I must tell you that Al'x Sun
is indisposed," Vitor said.
"It's not the great Al'x of the Sun I wish to have lead my
armies," Piratess said.
"Who then?" Vitor asked.
"The Warrior known as Buffy," Piratess answered and watched
Vitor's shocked reaction.
"This surprises you?" she asked.
"Yes. I would have thought you'd select an elf, or at least
someone who is counted among them," he answered.
"She has an aura of power, matched only by her mate," Piratess
said calmly.
"Mage Willow will not leave her wife," Vitor answered.
"We shall see about that when the sun sets tomorrow," Piratess
answered and turned away, but paused, nodding towards the door Amy had left
through. "She'll make a fine Queen. If the Royals don't dispose of her
first" she said.
"I will not allow that to happen," Vitor said calmly.
"Again, we shall see. I bid you a good night, King Vitor," she
said and left.
"Bloody Drow," Vitor cursed under his breath. But, he couldn't
ignore the truth of her words. The Royals could easily have Amy killed. In
war, things just seem to happen.
Buffy rolled over and gazed at her wife.
"Buffy, I don't want you to go," she said in a low voice.
"I have to. I'm here to help and that's what I'm going to do,"
Buffy answered with finality.
"But the baby." Willow said, but was stopped.
"Isn't due for another eight and a half months," Buffy said,
"plus, you'll be there to protect me."
"I can't talk you out of this?" Willow asked.
"If I get chosen to go, I'll go," Buffy answered, shaking her
head "I, we, owe this world and I would like to keep it a safe place," she
added.
"I'll. do some spells then," Willow said and rolled away from
her.
"Willow, you know I have to do this right?" Buffy asked.
"Yes," Willow answered quietly.
"But you don't like it?"
"Of course I don't. This is my baby too and I want to protect
it." Willow whispered.
"Then I ask you to trust me. Trust our love, and your magic, to
get us through this," Buffy said, rolling Willow back over to face her.
"I trust you, Buffy. I always have, but this is a war and there'
s gonna be lots of fighting and killing and people doing things to other
people that really aren't nice things to do and ."
"I know, I know, " Buffy said, with a finger on Willows lips to
stop the babble stream, "and I'm as scared as you are, but if a war comes,
we'll be no safer huddled in here, behind the battlements," she argued.
"I don't have to like though," Willow said, pouting
"Neither do I, love, neither do I," Buffy said and kissed her
wife's forehead.
"Did we just have our first marital fight?" Willow asked after a long
silence.
"Guess so. And quietly," Buffy answered with a smile and another
kiss.
