The Blue Dragon
Windows of the Soul

They say that the eyes are the windows of the soul but they never tell you
exactly what a soul is. And they never tell you the price for having a soul.
Buffy knew all about having a soul and losing one. She had lost her own in a
way on the day that Angel had lost his. She had seen up close and personal
the price of losing a soul; every time she killed a vampire that had once
been a friend. She wasn't going to let it happen again if she could help it.

Which was why she was planning on taking the vampire currently in front of
her, sucking on a one-time friend, down. "Oh yeah, this bitch is going down
hard." Buffy thought.

Buffy took a running leap and kicked the small vampire across the back
alley. Not wasting any time she did a series of roundhouse kicks followed by
a good old-fashioned one-two punch. Then lifting the girl up she slammed her
into the wall and brought the stake over her heart. With a hard thrust Buffy
pushed the stake in only to have it splinter into a million pieces. "Damn
another bullet proof vest. I hate that." The slayer stated.

The smaller vampire took the moment of confusion and flipped Buffy headfirst
into the wall and took off running. Buffy twisted out of the throw in order
to avoid hitting her head and landed flat on her back. "Stupid Ninja
costume" Buffy spat out as she moved to stand up.

Then she heard Francis Becker moaning and she rushed to her French lab
partners side. "Francis are you ok. I thought you were dead." Buffy said as
she moved to help the girl. Francis opened her eyes, smiled and pounced on
Buffy, game face on. The next second she found herself pinned to the ground
with Francis Becker's fangs pressing into her neck. She was just about to
send the vampire wheeling when somebody neatly sliced off her head. As Buffy
focused through the dust, she saw the black costume of her ninja dressed
'friend.'

Buffy then felt the point of the sword against her neck. The girl was
dressed in black from head to toe. She wore the mask of a ninja. But it was
her eyes that drew Buffy's attention. They glowed a bright blue and were
beautiful. Somehow without being told the slayer knew this creature had some
kind of soul. It was as if her eyes truly were windows to her soul. Buffy
was so caught up in looking at them she had missed her shirt being
unbuttoned. The girl was opening up her shirt. Keeping the sword against her
neck the girl lowered her head down and pressed her ear over the slayer's
heart. Buffy realized the creature was checking for her heart beat.

"I have a heart. You know you could just ask. Didn't anyone ever teach you
that it's rude to undress a person without at least taking her out to dinner
and a movie." Buffy quibbed.

The girl's eyes flashed a deeper blue and she moved like lighting, blinking
in an out of the spectacle range until Buffy could no longer see her moving.
Looking down at her open shirt Buffy said to no one in particular. "Fine
feel me up and run away, see if I send you a Christmas card."

It was Tuesday afternoon and Buffy was telling the gang about her Ninja
experience minus the part about the open shirt, she was not going to tell
Xander about that ever, when Ms. Wilson, the Special Ed teacher walked into
the library.

"Hello Mr. Giles, I see you actually have students in the library." She
stated.

"Yes, yes, may I help you?" Giles said almost rudely.

"Actually I was looking for Buffy Summers. She was supposed to meet me after
school, ten minutes ago to be exact. Principle Snyder mentioned something
about tracking her down in the library." She explained.

"Sorry, I forgot." Buffy said

"Forgot what?" Willow whispered.

"Snyder caught me coming in late again yesterday and now I have to work in
the Special Ed classroom during my free period and after school." Buffy
explained.

"Only two days a week after school." Ms. Wilson said, "Do you think we can
go back to my classroom, there are several things I need to go over with
you. Maybe Ms Rosenburg can come along as well, from what I hear she is an
excellent teacher."

"Really." Willow said flattered.

The next day during lunch Buffy and Willow joined Oz, Xander and Cordelia at
their usual lunch table.

"So how was the first day of volunteer work?" Oz asked before kissing his
girlfriend.

"I don't remember volunteering!" Buffy said

"It was fun. I get to work with computers. Helping a couple of students with
CP learn how to use them to speak with. It is so cool. Jerry, he is one of
the guys I am working with, he can say all kinds of things and he wants me
to program his laptop to say a lot more." Willow babbled excitedly.

"How about you Buffy, what does she have you doing?" Xander asked.

"Cleaning" Buffy said frustrated. The group all laughed.

Two Weeks later.

Buffy was at her usual post cleaning the classroom when she heard Ms. Wilson
say, "Kelm, I am sorry but I don't have time to read to you today." Buffy
had heard the teacher say that a lot to this particular student.

"Mrs. Wilson I can read to Kelm." Anything beat wiping out the microwave.

"Fine, but the microwave and counter still have to be cleaned." And then Ms.
Wilson left to have a cigarette.

"So what do you need me to read? Buffy asked.

Kelm just handed Buffy a magazine. "Archeology Today, pretty heavy stuff.
You and Mr. Giles should get together." Buffy said taking a seat next to the
girl. Kelm was smaller then her. Built like a Russian gymnast. She was dark
haired with dark brown tan. Her eyes were permanently hidden behind dark
mirrored glasses. Ms. Wilson had explained that there was something wrong
with the girl's eyes and the glasses were doctor's orders. She also said
what ever was wrong with them kept her from learning how to read.

Kelm flipped through the pages until she found the article she wanted.
'Mythology of Dragons' was its title.

"Dragons huh, Ok I'll read it to you, but you have to help me clean up."
Buffy said smiling.

"I'll do the microwave, if you read the whole thing to me." Kelm replied
happily. It was the first time Buffy had heard the girl speak.

"So how goes the spud squad?" Faith asked between punches.

Buffy got a solid kick in and said, "Faith don't call them that, they have
special needs kinda like you."

Faith tried to kick Buffy's legs out from under her only to have the blond
slayer jump out of the way and knock Faith flat on her ass.

"Impressive, but the only special needs I have, well sister, I think you
could handle." Faith said eyeing Buffy up and down seductively.

"Sorry, you're not my type." Buffy stated.

"Right I am not a brooding vampire, stupid me, I forgot."

"Are we going to spar or are you going to lay there and whine?" Buffy said

Faith kipped up and moved her arms up into a fight stance. Then she quickly
dropped them. "Yo, can we help you?"

Buffy turning around and saw Kelm approaching them "Hi Kelm, what's up?"

"You said if I came to the library after school you would help me look up
dragons." The girl whispered.

"That's right I did, come on lets see what we can find." Buffy said moving
toward the card catalog.

"I can come back later or not at all. I don't want to bother you and your
friend. " Kelm whispered. It was clear she was afraid.

"Don't be silly. Besides the article we read today was pretty cool." Buffy
began to look through the index and then stopped. "Kelm, I know you can't
read, so how did you find the article?"

"I get a subscription so that I can look at the pictures. Ms. Wilson set it
up so it comes to the school. I like Archeology Today. It has cool pictures.
Way better than National Geographic. I liked the pictures that went with the
article. I don't always get to hear the articles. I don't think Ms. Wilson
likes reading them to me. I don't think she likes me that much." Kelm
explained.

"Yeah I kind of get that." Buffy said honestly. "Ok, I got the goods on
dragons. I don't think most of these have pictures but we can still check
them out.

Oddly, Buffy found her time working in the Special Ed. Classroom rewarding.
She honestly liked helping people and it was nice to help someone without
flexing her muscles and breaking her nails. At least now she wasn't cleaning
the microwave alone. Two of Ms. Wilson students, Lisa and Mark, cleaned the
counters and microwave under her instructions. And if that wasn't good
enough for Ms. Wilson, Kelm did it for her.

Kelm really was a mystery to her. Lisa, Mark, Chris and Jenny were basically
retarded. They were all sweet and could follow simple instructions if you
were patient with them. Jerry, David and Laurie were in wheelchairs and had
CP. Jerry and David were both petty smart but couldn't speak without the aid
of computers. Laurie was not really that bright but she could speak a
little. Willow was enjoying working with Jerry and David and there
computers. Buffy was enjoying watching Willow. And that left only Kelm who
didn't seem to fit into the class very well. Ms. Wilson clearly didn't like
the girl.

Kelm was bright, not really retarded. She could figure things out quickly
but she could not read. She had a terrible time just identifying the A B
C's. Even the pictures in her magazines seemed hard for her to look at from
time to time. She often traced them with her fingers to identify them. Buffy
might have guessed she was blind, until she saw Kelm playing racket ball in
gym class. The girl was a fantastic player.

"Buffy can you read to me?" Kelm asked the slayers disturbing her train of
thought.

"Sure, so what are we reading today?" Kelm handed her a book. Buffy turned
the cover over and frowned. Opening the book her first thoughts were
confirmed.

"Kelm, I can't read this, It's not in English. And it's old." Buffy
explained.

"It has interesting pictures." Kelm replied.

"Did you get it from the library?" Buffy asked studying the wood cut
drawing.

"Yesterday, after school you said I could look around." Kelm tried to
explain.

"Which pictures were you interested in?" Buffy asked, she knew Kelm was
disappointed. Kelm began flipping the pages around until she found the
picture she wanted. Buffy watched as she traced part of the picture with her
finger to make sure it was the right one.

"This one, it has a dragon." Kelm stated.

"You and dragons" Buffy looked at the picture and her eyebrow's roses. It
was a picture of a knight in middle aged custom fighting a demon. The demon
looked human except for reptile like scales on its back and fangs in its
mouth.

"I don't think this is about a dragon Kelm. Why don't you find something
else for me to read to you? Something in English would be good." Buffy
stated. As Kelm turned away to find another book, Buffy slipped the book
into Willow's backpack. There was something that bothered her about the
picture. A memory from a dream or a past life. She just knew she needed to
get this book to Giles.

[][][][][][][][][][][][]

"Maybe if you tell me what you expect to gain from this novel I could help
you Buffy." A patient Giles said.

"Kelm said it was about a dragon. I think she might be right but the picture
is of a demon. Can you read the caption under the picture."

"She said it was about a dragon? How did she know?" Giles asked puzzled.

"Just tell me what the caption says."
"Saint George and the Dragon." Giles stated.

"I wonder how she knew?" Buffy asked

"Kelm, her last name is McVey correct?" Giles asked as he moved to his index
cards, "I remember reading something about the McVey clan during the time of
Bonnie Prince Charles." Giles was entering research mode. "It's possible
that it's a race memory." Giles added excitedly.

Angel was in a hurry. He was going on patrol with Buffy and he didn't want
to be late and have her starting without him. The girl could get in the
oddest kinds of trouble, he thought to himself. As he continued to think
about his true love he failed to notice the blue eyed demon lurking in the
shadows.

The next thing he remembered before he lost continuousness was the creature
fangs entering the back of his neck and it's glowing eyes.
