I found something interesting on the Entertainment Weekly site. Go directly to http://www.ew.com/ew/daily/0,2514,3772,buffyvampireslayermay.html for the details. 

It seems that, should WB not be able to afford to keep the show, ABC may be interested in buying the series. Since negotiations don't start until January, don't look for Buffy to show up on the ABC schedule right away. Stay tuned for details.
