I'm ignoring the questions regarding Riley and mimes. Personally I'd just like to see a tree fall on Riley.

I believe that Joss has begun the process of fixing Xander. In the episode "The Replacement", he allowed Xander to move out of his parents' basement and into his own place. And by the main story of splitting Xander into two halves, his suave half and his scruffy half, he proved that Xander has it in him to be more self-confident, more assured, and possibly less blind to his own mistakes. There was a lovely scene where suave-Xander consoled Anya, who was finally dealing with the fact that she is now mortal. As Giles observed in the episode, there was nothing in either Xander that our Xander doesn't possess. I think that Xander finally saw that towards the end of the ep, and will grow from that experience. He now knows that he can be assertive, he can be responsible and he can be a better person.

As for Anya, I'm not giving up on her yet. She's becoming more human over the last few eps, more of her own person and less of a Cordelia wannabe. She'll never be as good a choice as Willow(let's face it, who is?) but she has potential.
