Chapter one - Slip Skirts
"Hi Giles, Cordy and I are going to do our after lunch thing ok?" Buffy said
as she and Cordelia Chase bounced into her stepfather's office.
"Yes, well... I believe Ms Tesh, the art teacher, brought back the Cezaun
and the Monet books yesterday. I put them back on the shelves this morning."
Buffy leaned down to Giles and kissed him on his cheek as she flipped over
the title of the Book he was reading.
"Thanks Giles, do you ever read anything in English?"
"Just leave me in peace and go to the stacks." Giles replied trying to sound
annoyed but failing. Giles truly love the girl as if she was his own
daughter.
"Ok, we will leave you in peace."
"Thanks Mr. Giles" Cordelia added.
"Anytime Ms. Chase." Giles smiled then went back to reading the Codex.
Buffy and Cordelia came to the library every day after lunch. They would
hide in the back of the stacks and look at art books. Buffy didn't really
care that much about art but she loved to watch Cordelia's eyes when she
looked at the pictures. The girls settled on the floor with the oversized
books and began looking at the pictures.
"This Cezaun guy was into lime shades."
"Buffy you hate still life, why not get another book?"
"Ok, so is the Monet guy a still life dude too?"
"No, impressionist, and he is into the blue shade thing, here take it. I
think you'll like him."
"When you're done with it Cordy, I want to look at the 'Draw the Marvel Way'
book again."
"Why am I not surprised? Speaking of surprised, what do you think of her?"
"Her who?"
"Buffy Summers I have known you since we were five, I have eyes so don't
tell me you weren't checking her out."
"So I peaked it doesn't mean anything."
"And what did you think?" Cordelia said while turning the page of her book.
Cordelia had known Buffy had no interest in guys since they were in seventh
grade.
"Ok I admit she's cute. But she is probably not into... well...she seems
square."
"You like square, Summers." Cordelia told her friend. "Buffy you'll find
somebody I promise."
"Yeah, but will they like my closet - it's kind of small." Buffy said
turning away from Cordelia and returning to her book. She just didn't want
to talk about it anymore.
Cordelia returned to her Monet. It was hard for Buffy, Cordelia knew that.
High School and being different just didn't go together. Cordelia knew what
it was like to be in love when that special someone didn't know you existed.
Cordy had been in love with Xander since seventh grade.
Still Cordelia wasn't dumb. She had known Buffy was gay well before the girl
was ready to admit it to herself. And she was pretty sure Buffy had a crush
on her. A crush she couldn't return. But the friendship was so important to
them both, the brunette cheerleader figured they would just work it out some
how.

Willow came flying into the library forgetting her strength and slamming the
door hard.
Rupert Giles came out of his office wondering what teen had just remembered
they had a report due in 10 minutes and needed a book.
"I just spent my first day at my new school breaking into the locker room to
check on a dead guy. One killed by the things found in that book, Vampyr,
you tried to give me? Do you have any idea what is going on because I would
really, really like to know." Willow finished by crossing her arms and
giving Giles her look of death.
"Yes well, I had heard..." Giles then stopped to take his glasses off and
clean them. "About the boy being found in the locker room."
"Yeah well, did you hear that he had two small holes in his neck and all his
blood was drained? Isn't that the weirdest thing you have every heard of
Mr.... I don't know your name do I? Not that I want to know your name, even
though I should learn it because I go to school here and you work here and
this doesn't matter so what do you know about it?" Willow babbled.
"It's Mr. Giles and will he rise again?"
"No! To make you a vampire they have to drink your blood. And then you have
to drink their blood. It's like a whole big beverage thing. Mostly they're
just gonna kill you. Why am I still talking to you?" Willow said still in
babble rant mode.
"So you are sure the boy will not raise again? "
"Yes."
"You know Ms Rosenberg, that boy was just the beginning. It is why you are
here now."
"I am here because my father got a job in Sunnydale. Oh, why can't you
people just leave me alone?" Willow whispered pulling her arms tightly
around her body.
"Because you are the Slayer. In each generation a Slayer is born -"
Willow cut off the watcher in mid sentence "One girl in all the world, a
Chosen One, one born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires... Mr.
Giles I have heard it. And I have been there and done that. I quit. I moved
on to the living." An angry Willow shouted.
" I really don't understand this attitude. You... you've accepted your duty,
y-you've slain vampires before..." Giles asked puzzled
"Yes - at the cost of my watcher's life. I can't do it anymore. I am just
not slayer material." Tears streaked Willow's face before she turned and ran
out of the library.
"Damn" Giles took off after her, managing to grab her at the end of the
hall.
"Ms Rosenberg, it's getting worse. Something's coming, something...
something is, is going to happen here. Soon!"
"Boy, that was clear."
"The signs, as far as I can tell, point to a crucial mystical upheaval, very
soon. Days! Possibly less!"
"Oh, come on! This is Sunnydale! How bad an evil can there be here?" Willow
said wiping her tears away.
Buffy and Cordelia had followed Giles out of the library stopping at the
door.
"Buffy what was that all about?"
"My step-dad has some weird issues Cordy, you know that, they were probably
just rehearsing a play or quoting Shakespeare. Who knows? Let's get to
Chemistry before we're late." Buffy said trying to hide the feeling that the
hair was rising on the back of her neck.

Willow double-checked her outfit, hoping it wasn't modeled from the softer
side of Sears. Then she handed the bouncer her money and entered the club.
The music was loud but comforting. Willow worked her way into a corner at
the bar trying to stay out of the way. She saw Jesse and Cordelia dancing
together. She saw Xander Harris holding court at one of the booths
surrounded by a group of blondes and football players. The red head was
happily drinking her coffee and listening to the music when Buffy Summers
plopped down on the stool next to her.
"Hey, glad you came."
"Hi, it was nice of you to ask me. You did invite me to come, right?' Willow
nervously asked.
"That was the general idea behind saying, 'Why don't you come to the Bronze
with us tonight?'" Buffy laughed. Her smile was contagious.
"It was really nice of you, thank you." Willow said while she looked into
the cheerleaders' hazel eyes.
"No big, besides I was curious about the new girl."
"Ah don't be, I am just boring."
"Yeah, 'Exquisitely Boring', I can see that." Buffy laughed out loud before
taking a sip of her coke.
Cordelia and Jesse had stopped dancing and were waving Buffy and Willow to
join them at their table.
Buffy grabbed Willow's arm and pulled her to the table.
"Hey, glad you came," Cordelia said looking at Buffy carefully.
"So, you ready to tell us all your secrets?" Jesse joked.
"Secrets, what secrets, why would you think I have secrets?" Willow
panicked.
"Relax, we're just curious about you. There aren't that many new kids in
Sunnydale." Buffy said putting a gentle hand on Willow's shoulder which was
strangely calming her down.
"In Sunnydale we have to make our own fun, so tell us about yourself."
Cordelia stated.
"Everyone wants to know about me. Great."
"Speaking of great - Buffy isn't that your step-dad?' Jesse said as he
pointed to the door.
"You and your mom didn't have another fight again?" Cordelia asked.
"Not that I remember." Buffy said before she turned to face her stepfather.
"Ah Giles, is something wrong?"
"Oh hello Buffy, Cordelia, Jesse, I didn't know you would all be here."
"Like where else would we be in Sunnydale Mr. Giles?" Jesse stated.
"Ah yes, well, actually I am here to see Ms. Rosenberg." Giles paused then
added "About an overdue book."
"Oh come on Giles, she's only been in school one day, how'd she get an
overdue book so fast?" Buffy argued.
"It's ok, I think he means I forgot to check it out, right Mr. Giles."
Willow stated giving Giles a look that said 'are you nuts.'
"Oh exactly. Now if you would come with me over there I think we could get
this cleared up." Willow pulled away from the table and followed the
tweed-clad man upstairs.
"Is it me or is your dad getting weirder." Cordelia observed.
"Oh my dad is getting weirder alright, but my step-dad is just out there."
Buffy said before taking another drink of coke.
"Well I am going to prowl. Witness me prowling." Jesse replied eyeing the
room.
"Yeah, go dance boy." Cordelia said as she pushed Jesse away playfully.

"Buffy's your daughter? I didn't think you watcher guys went in for that."
"I believe you're confusing watchers with priests. And Buffy is my
step-daughter."
"So is this the 'stay away from my stepdaughter' speech?" Willow asked.
Being the slayer didn't usually endear you to parents.
"As much as I would like to say yes, Ms. Rosenberg, Buffy has a mind of her
own. And she seems to do the exact opposite of what I tell her to do.
Therefore, I gave up on giving the girl advice sometime ago. No, I am here
because of you."
"Ok, I am listening." Willow said
"A colleague of mine gave me this to give to you. Well, this and a message."
Giles handed Willow a small jewelry box. "She said to tell you the harvest
was coming and you should be prepared." Willow opened the box to find a Star
of David hanging on a gold chain. Within the gold outlay of the star was a
small cross, with other small crosses carved in the design of the star.
"It's beautiful, but what does the message mean? What is the harvest?"
"Frankly, I have no idea. That was all she said, that and she hoped the
necklace would go over better than a cross with your father."
"So who is..." Willow stopped talking as she noticed Xander Harris leaving
with a girl. "Oh bite me."
"Is that?" Giles had followed her eyes to the boy below.
"Xander Harris, with a vampire."
"Are you sure?"
Willow just glared at him before starting down the stairs. "I should come
with you, yes?" Giles said following her.
"One vampire I can handle, do you think you could find out more about this
harvest thing?"

"Oh great, now where did Jesse go?" Buffy asked Cordelia.
Cordelia, looking up from her sketchpad, replied. "I think he left with that
girl he was dancing with earlier."
"Perfect, he was going to drive me home."
"Maybe Xander or Larry will give you a ride. Isn't your step-father still
here?"
"No, he just left with Willow. God, I hope that's not some new kinky thing
he is into because mom will never get over it. My father was bad enough."
"Buffy be real, Giles, Mr. family man. Please. Still his trip with this girl
is weird." Cordelia considered carefully before continuing, "Buffy, Ms.
Dennis the counselor asked me to help her catch up in school."
"Yeah, you told me."
"Yeah, but what I didn't tell you is why she needs to catch up. She was
kicked out of her old school for fighting and burning down the gym I think.
It could be he's just trying to help her. Giles is like that. Look at how
many times he's.... "
"Cordelia, it's ok. Giles cares about you. So do I. It wasn't a big deal. So
he came over and picked you up to spend the night with me, a few times."
Buffy said quickly. She hated it when Cordelia came down on herself.
"Yeah just picked me up at 3 in the morning after the police came to break
up my parents' drunken fight."
Buffy squeezed her friend's arm to let her know it was ok.
"Cordy, I guess you're right, he is just being Giles and helping her out.
You want me to walk you home?"
"No, it's not far, and it's in the wrong direction. Why don't you go see if
you can find Jesse and get a ride home? I think I am going to find someplace
quiet to sketch for a while." Cordelia said.
"Sure?"
"Find Jesse."

Buffy had spotted Jesse, Xander and two girls heading into the cemetery
outside the Bronze. She waved goodbye to Cordelia then turned her attention
back to Jesse. They were about 1000 yards ahead of her so she jogged along
following them. When they entered a tomb, she started running.
Outside of the tomb, she heard voices. She recognized Jesse's and Xander
Harris talking inside the tomb. They were laughing and flirting with the
girls. The blond cheerleader entered the tomb in time to see one of the
girls kissing Jesse's neck. She knew something was not right about it but
couldn't figure out exactly what it was that was wrong with the picture.
"Hey, what's going on?" she asked.
Jesse weakly pulled back holding his neck while blood dripped down his arm.
Jesse explained. "She gave me a hickey. I don't feel so good." Then he
staggered forward.
"Christ!" Xander said and grabbed Jesse to steady him.
"What the hell!" Buffy said moving toward her friend.
"Exactly girl!" Xander's date said, grabbing Buffy while morphing into game
face. The Vampire sank her teeth into the cheerleader, drinking her dry and
dropping the dead body to the ground.
