Chasing Cordelia

Buffy was late coming home from school. She had of course left school during
sixth period. Strangely Giles had told the school secretary he had sent her
home because she was not feeling well. He didn't want her getting into any
unnecessary trouble.

Still he was worried. Finally Buffy dragged herself into the door. It was
clear she had been crying and it nearly broke his heart.

"I guess I am grounded again." Buffy said as she hung up her coat.

"No, though we do need to talk." He said evenly. Mostly he just wanted to
take her into his arms and hug her like he did when she was little.

"Not now Giles I don't think I could take it." Buffy replied.

"Alright then later, but we will talk." He said firmly then he pulled her
into his arms and let her cry once again.

After what seemed like an eternity he pulled away. "If you don't want to eat
your mothers cooking then we need to start dinner. They both hated Joyce's
cooking.

"I'll cook." Buffy offered.

"No I will cook, you have some homework to catch up on. I took the liberty
of picking up your class assignments."

"Figures." Buffy replied even though she was actually grateful. It meant he
covered for her being gone.

Dinner was quiet and Willow showed up a little after they were done eating.
Joyce did the dishes while Buffy did her homework. Giles and Willow went
through their early evening ritual of staff fighting in the backyard.

Buffy was a little impressed that her stepfather held his own against
Willow. 'Well for the most part' she thought as Willow knocked him off his
feet and about ten feet across the backyard.

Mr. Giles I am so sorry are you ok?" The frightened slayer said as she
rushed to his side.

"I fine but that is enough practice for today." Giles said trying to remain
stoic as he stood up.

"Honey are you really ok?" Joyce whispered into his ear.

"I am fine, now all of you go back inside." Then in a whisper only Willow
and Buffy could hear Giles said, "While I wait for the feeling to return to
my arms."

After a few minutes Giles recovered to find Xander coming in the front door.
They all gathered in Giles private study. Willow was flipping through books
on possession. Giles picked up another book and began to flip through the
pages.

"Would you all like something to drink?" Joyce asked uncomfortable with her
husbands work and her daughters involvement.

"Yes a cup of tea would be nice." He replied gazing up from his book for
only a second.

"Let me guess, cokes for the rest of you?" Joyce replied.

"That would be great mom." "Thanks Mrs. Giles." "Yeah thanks Mrs. Giles."
Came from the teens in the room.

After Joyce left the room Giles moved over to a piece of blank poster board
he had pinned to the wall. Picking up a marker he said, "Ok, lets go over
what we know about possession. There is of course the classic demon
possession." He stated writing down the words on the board.

"Poltergeist possession." Willow added, then looking at Xander's blank look
she added, "Ghost"

"Oh" Xander replied.

"There are also certain medical or mental conditions that produce this kind
of behavior, we can't rule that out completely." Giles explained.

"If it were just the four psycho-students maybe but Cordelia too. No way."
Buffy said crossing her arms.

"I have to agree with Buffy. Cordelia has been acting weird since she passed
out at the zoo. Well actually now that I think about it, Kyle, Rhonda, Tor
and Heidi were passed out too in the hyena cage." Xander said taking a coke
from Joyce who had just returned with their drinks.

"What do you mean passed out!" Buffy screamed

"Buffy calm down, Xander tell us what happened." Giles said slowly holding
back his own anger.

"The other day when we were at the zoo. You remember Cordelia went after the
psycho-four. Anyway they went into the closed hyena exhibit and Cordy
followed them in. Only I got stopped by the single most boring human on the
planet, the zookeeper I think, anyway he gives me this weird lecture on
hyena's calling out peoples names and stuff about African tribes, Massive or
something."

"The Masai?" Giles asked.

"Yeah that was it. Anyway when Mr. Zookeeper walks off, I finally follow
Cordy in. As I was going in Lance ran past me screaming so I run in and find
the psycho-four and Cordelia all on the ground. Then she and the others got
up and everything seemed ok." Xander finished then took a drink from his
soda.

"Wait a minute, Willow may I have that book, the one with the green cover."
Giles asked pointing to a stack of books." Quickly opening the book, Giles
flipped through the pages until her found what he was looking for. "Here it
is Animal possession. The Masai believe that Hyena's can take over the souls
of humans."

"He's so cute!" Willow said as she reached down and picked up the small pig.

Principle Flutie reached out for Willow to hand the pig back to him. "He's
not cute. No! He's a fierce Razorback!"

Buffy smiled as mischief danced in her eyes and said, " He doesn't look
mean, Mr. Flutie."

"He's mean, he's ready for action! See?" The principle said pointing at the
pigs' helmet and foam tusks. "Here are the tusks..." Then he gestured at a
piece of serrated green foam tied to the pig's back, "the scary Razorback!"

Both girls laughed then Buffy replied, "You're right. He's a fine mascot and
will promote school spirit."

" Uh, he'd better. Costs a fortune to feed him." Then picking the pig up and
cradling him in his arms he said to the pig. "Alright, let's get you back
into your cage."

Both girls continue down the hall toward their first class of the day.

"So is Giles going to visit the zookeeper today?" Willow asked.

"Yeah only Mom is going with him." Buffy replied. "Willow he said we needed
to talk about what happened with Cordelia and I, but he didn't seem mad do
you think it will be ok?" Buffy asked in a small voice that spoke of her
inner fear.

"Giles is pretty cool and I am pretty sure he loves you. It will be ok
Buffy." Willow told her friend praying she was right."

They made it through their morning classes and were sitting outside eating
lunch. They hadn't seen Cordelia or her new gang all day. Until now that is.
Cordelia and her new posse were terrorizing the students and they moved from
one student to another. Willow and Buffy noticed they were sniffing around
literally and taking food right out of the student's hands. Buffy watched in
horror as Cordelia shoved Lance onto the ground and stole his hot dog. The
cheerleader bit it in half and spat it back out.

Willow followed by Buffy ran across the quad over to Cordelia. Willow bent
over and helped Lance up. He picked up his books and ran, something he was
doing a lot of lately.

"Was that really necessary Cordelia?" Buffy asked.

"Oh look it's the dyke! Still trying to get back in my pants." Cordelia said
loud enough for the whole student body to hear. And since the quad had just
gone silent it appeared most of the student body was now listening.

"Look Buffy, what a dumb ass name by the way, there is no way in hell I
would ever sleep with you and your pasty face again. Why I ever did in the
first place is a mystery to me. No wait, maybe it's because you were there
in my bed coming on to me. Doing nasty things to me while I slept. Just
because I spent my life being beaten by my father doesn't mean you get to do
what ever you want to me dyke bitch." Cordelia said before shoving Buffy
away. Buffy just turned and ran tears flowing.

Then Cordelia came over to Willow who was still standing there crossing her
arms. "Now you on the other hand, I could do you anytime. You're hot."
Cordelia said running her hands up and Willow's body. Willow just shoved
Cordelia away.

"You're not in your right mind which is why I am not pounding you into the
ground." With that Willow turned and ran after Buffy.

Buffy had run directly to the library. She slammed open the front door
before she rushed over to Giles. "We have got to do something, Cordelia
is..... well she ..... I don't know... just do something Giles." The
desperate teen screamed.

"Buffy we are working on the problem as best we can. Your mother and I are
going to see the zookeeper this afternoon. We are doing research as quickly
as possible." Giles was cut off as Buffy screamed, "I cannot believe that
you, of all people, are trying to scully me. There is something supernatural
at work here." Buffy then reached over and grabbed some books and said,
"Get your books! Look stuff up!"

Willow made it into the library at this time hearing the last part of her
friends rant. "Good idea Buffy, we can all look stuff up." The slayer knew
she needed to keep Buffy's mind on research and off what Cordelia had said.

Giles was getting ready to leave and pick up Joyce while the two girls sat
in the library reading.

" Wow! Apparently Noah rejected the hyenas from the Ark because he thought
they were an evil impure mixture of dogs and cats." Buffy said happy to have
found some vague reference.

"Yes well the Masai tribe in Africa tell the same story basically." Willow
added.

Giles came out of his office and said, "The Masai of the Serengeti have
spoken of animal possession for, for generations. I... I should have
remembered that." Giles replied while putting on his jacket.

"Apparently there's a, a sect of animal worshipers known as Primals. They
believe that humanity, uh, consciousness, uh, the soul, is a, is a
perversion, a dilution of spirit. Uh, to them the animal state is holy. They
are able, through trans-possession, to, to, um, draw the spirit of certain
animals into themselves." Giles continued searching his memory."

"So Cordelia is just acting like a hyena." Buffy asked wanting to believe it
wasn't the girl she loved who had said those cruel things to her earlier.

"Well, only the most predatory of animals are, are of interest to the
Primals, so, uh, yes, yes, that would fit, yes." Giles replied to his
stepdaughter.

"So, what happens to the person once the spirit's in them?" Buffy said as
her own fear for her first time lover showed.

Dreading the answer Giles replied " If it goes unchecked..." but he was
unable to finish as he watched his child pale with each word.

"Giles I need to know the truth. Please tell me." Buffy asked.

Instead of words, Giles walked back in his office and opened a book. He set
the book open in front of Willow and Buffy. There on the page was a drawing
of people with limbs bitten off, heads missing and other massive injuries.

"I think I should find Cordelia." Willow said picking up the book and
looking at the woodcutting carefully.

Just then Xander walked in. "I guess you all heard."

"Heard what?" Willow asked.

"That I am gay. Cordelia announced it at lunch. We were there." Buffy
grumbled.

"No I already kinda knew that." Xander said with a strange look on his face.
"No what I meant was about Herbert the pig. Somebody ate him!"
