Trinity's Child 10/?
The tropical night air had cooled from the heat for the day. After a
day just lounging around the hotel pool, Jenny and Paul were refreshed and
ready for a big night out. They walked the back streets of Singapore trying
to find the night club that they had heard about the other day. Their problem
was that a lot of streets shared the same name which got confusing. However
they knew that they were on the right track as the faint sounds of club music
reached their ears.
The walk hadn't been a total waste. They had passed houses and
restaurants from which a rich and heady smell of exotic cooking wafted. Uncle
Xander couldn't cook, Paul thought to himself, but Aunt Willow was a
fantastic cook. But from the smell coming from some of these places, these
cooks would make her look like Xander on a bad day. Feeling a little peckish,
Paul and Jenny finally found the place they were after.
The club was dark and a little smoky. The decor was black and silver
with mirrors on the walls and ceiling of the dance floor. The lights and
sound system were average but the DJ at least seemed competent. Paul and
Jenny looked around at the place and at the people. There was about an even
mix of locals and tourists dancing and drinking. The mood was up beat and
looked promising for a great night.
"What would you like a drink?" Paul asked.
"Yeah, get us a beer. Maybe one of the local brews." Jenny told him.
Paul shouldered his short, stocky frame to the bar while Jenny looked at the
dance floor and some of the crazy moves being put out there. Paul returned
after a few minutes with a large jug and two glasses.
"What you get?" asked Jenny.
"A jug of Anchor Bitter." he replied.
"Good. I'm too sober to drink that Bin Tang just yet." Jenny said with
a laugh. Paul looked around.
"Where's our table?" he asked.
"What do you mean, 'where's our table?' Who said anything about me
getting a table?"
"Jen, that's the way it works. One person gets the beers and the other
gets the table."
"Sorry. I didn't know." Jen apologised.
"You learn something new everyday. Let's try to get one." Paul said
turning. He ran smack into another guy, spilling some beer on himself.
"Sorry." the guy said.
"No worries, mate. I was planning on spilling beer on this shirt
tonight. Better now than later." Paul joked.
"You want a hand with that?" the guy said, indicating to the jug of
beer in Paul's hand.
"Thanks. We're looking for a table." Paul told the other guy.
"Why don't the two of you come sit with me and my sister?" the other
guy asked.
"OK. Cool." said Jenny. The three of them weaved their way through the
crowd to a table where a girl sat. The girl smiled.
"Tran, aren't you going to introduce me to your friends?" she said.
Tran put down the jug and turned to Paul and Jenny.
"Sorry. Um, I didn't quite..." Tran started.
"Jenny."
"Paul."
"OK. I'm Tran. Jenny, Paul, this is my sister Li." Tran introduced
everyone. Tran then went back to the bar to get another jug of beer and two
more glasses. Li pushed her long black hair behind her ear.
"I must apologise for Tran. My little brother sometimes forgets his
manners." said Li.
"Don't worry. My lump of a boyfriend isn't much better." Jenny said,
backhanding Paul. He rubbed his arm.
"Thanks for the complement." Paul said.
"You're welcome." replied Jenny. Li laughed.
"The course of true love." Li giggled. Paul poured a beer.
"Aren't you going to get me one?" Jenny asked.
"Why? Have your arms fallen off? Besides, I carried the beer here."
said Paul.
"No you didn't. Tran did." Jenny reminded him. Paul sputtered.
"Well, that's beside the point." Paul began. Li laughed again.
"You two are funny." Li said. Jenny replied with a grin.
"Helps pass the time."
Tran came back with the beer and glasses and the four of them started
to get to know each other. It turned out that Li and Tran lived not far from
the club and Li was taking Tran out tonight for his birthday.
"A toast! To Tran!" Paul said, hoisting his beer into the air. The
others raised their glasses.
"To Tran!" Paul chugged his beer and poured another.
"So Tran. What did your parents get you for your birthday? Can't be
any worse than the crappy shirt I got one year." Jenny asked. Li and Tran
looked saddened.
"My parents were in Beijing when, well, you know what happened." Tran
said. Paul looked down quietly.
"Yeah. Know the feeling. My Dad was in LA. Sorry." Paul mumbled. There
was a brief silence until a new track was played.
"Li, I love this song. You guys want to dance?" Jenny asked.
"I'd love to. Tran?" Li looked at her brother.
"Yeah. Why not." Tran said, pushing his sadness aside. Jenny turned to
Paul.
"You up for some wild and crazy moves?" Jen asked her soulmate. He
gave a huge grin.
"Are you kidding? I put the KY into kinky, baby!" he said in his
Austin Powers voice. Jenny rolled her eyes.
"Great. No more Classic Movies channel for you." she said and dragged
the group to the dance floor.
They had been dancing and having a great time for about an hour when
Paul seen them. Or rather didn't see them. Two girls, twins to be exact,
dancing with a couple of obvious tourists. That wasn't what caught his eye.
It was the fact that in the mirror the two guys were dancing with nothing.
"Jen, look." Paul said into Jenny's ear and indicating in the
direction of the vamps. Jen looked and it took a few moments to see what Paul
was on about. The two vamps were now leading the guys to the door. Jenny
looked around for Li and Tran but they had disappeared.
"Shit. We had better follow those vamps and ruin their dinner plans."
Jenny told Paul. Together they followed the vamps to a side alley. As
expected, the vamps decided that dinner was in order. What was unexpected was
Tran and Li coming out of nowhere with a flurry of kicks and punches. Jenny
and Paul were stunned for a moment before jumping into the fray.
Li managed to dust one of the vamps but the other got away. The two
guys who were the intended happy meals ran off, convinced they had been
drugged and mugged. Paul grabbed at his arm, a large gash seeped blood.
Instantly Jenny was at his side trying to cover the wound. Li looked at Jenny
and Paul.
"I guess that explanations are in order all round." she said. Checking
Paul's wound she helped Jenny tie a hanky over the gash.
"Come back to our place so we can clean it and get a proper bandage.
You OK?" Tran asked Paul. Paul nodded.
"Yeah. But I bet this never happened to Uncle Xander." he mumbled.
Xander was in serious trouble. The six armed demon in front of him was
seriously kicking his ass. He was hitting it with his club but he may as well
have been using a pencil for all the effect it was having on the creature.
Xander tried a flying kick, only to be smashed aside like a rag doll.
Stubbornly, Xander got up and, with the last of his strength tried
once more. Blue fire erupted from the creatures hands and engulfed Xander.
The force of the blast smashed Xander into a wall.
This is it. I'm dead.
The last thing Xander saw before everything went black was the
creature ripping Xander's heart out of his chest.
