You've done a pretty darn good job of capturing an inviolate truth I'm 
afraid. It's not one of those good one's either like.. Oh.. 
Something akin too Music Soothes the Soul.
It's not even one of the minor bad ones either such as 
'Bread always lands butter side down.'

No you got one the Darker truths..namely(Cliché I know but that 
doesn't make it any less true.) 

When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares into you.

In this case it seems the Abyss has eaten them.
Pity.

Those are not easy walls to climb and I don't see anyone even trying 
to reach for the first handhold.

Again...
Pity.
