re: OT: Buffy gets screwed at the Emmys

Yeah. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there were only two broadcast
networks and just one cable network involved in that list of most of
the important nomination spots. I've stopped watching ER (having seen
the indications early on in the season), and while I've always kind of
liked the Practice, it's just a show, not a force like some of the
other options for nomination (e.g. Buffy). You made another
interesting point, too, Kirayoshi -- despite it's intrinsic maturity
and literally aging story arc, Buffy will always suffer the stigma of
it's original high-school-age target audience; the high-ups at Emmy
probably think of it as just a glorified "Saved by the Bell". When it
comes to the sci-fi/fantasy angle, we'll just have to take the long
view; after several decades, the critics seem to be starting to like
the original Star Wars trilogy... maybe something like that will
happen with Buffy in a few years. And hey, maybe the combination of
Buffy, maybe eventually Angel, and Star Trek: Enterprise will finally
put UPN on the map! (Yes, I know I'm kidding myself. I don't care.)

I currently subscribe to the theory that the Emmy nomination board
doesn't even watch television, beyond the Big Three networks and
whatever HBO sends them to promote. Yeah, Sopranos and West Wing are
decent television, but the BTVS eps "The Body" and "The Gift"(I could
also argue "Blood Ties" or "Fool For Love" while I'm at it) were among
the best things on the air last season.

I'm still shocked that ER got nominated for ANYTHING, let alone best
series! God, that show hasn't been worth watching since Juliana
Margulies left last season. ER has become little more than a
prime-time soap set in a hospital, and hardly ranking with the best of
what's on this year. Seriously, Buffy deserved the fifth spot more
than ER. Hell, Walker Texas Ranger deserved it more.

Sad but true, 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' has several strikes against
it;
1) Emmy hates youth. Shows which target young audiences almost never
get nominated.
2) Emmy has never heard of UPN or WB. Those two networks are a
no-man's-land as far as they're concerned.
3) Emmy almost never nominates anything smelling of science-fiction
or fantasy. Apart from the occasional nomination for X-Files, genre
shows generally get the shaft. Evidence; Patrick Stewart turned in
seven solid seasons as Captain Picard on Star Trek TNG. Where's his
Emmy?

Simply put, the Emmy committee has once again chosen to celebrate the
old guard, ignoring the newer shows. If I were Sarah Michelle Gellar,
I'd take a good long look at the Emmy she won for playing Erika Kane's
daughter on All My Children. It's as close as she's gonna get. Which
is a pity, because she and her costars deserve so much more.
