TITLE: Daybreak Postponed [approximately] (8/12)
AUTHOR: Soren Nyrond
DISCLAIMER: All characters in this part belong to Joss Whedon and Mutant Enemy -- etc etc as in part (0/12). Some ideas have been borrowed for elsewhere to illuminate this story: they did once belong to Other Companies (and still do, I imagine), but since they are by way of being generic concepts, Idon't think anything's awry.
SUMMARY: Short but trenchant. Everybody should get the punch-line well inadvance.
ARCHIVING:: All enquiries welcomed
SPOILERS: None - none of this ever happened in the ME-world
AUTHOR'S NOTES: All nice feedback welcome.

DAYBREAK HAS BEEN POSTPONED

Part Seven - "Oh My - ."

"If you three have 'Eww', 'Gross' and 'Bloody Hell' covered, could I put in a bid for a quick, generic, 'Yuck' ?" Xander Harris asked. "Only I wouldn't want anyone to say I didn't express a view."

"I think the noises you've been making pretty well expressed your view," Buffy told Xander. Her voice was slightly abstracted, though: from where she half-lay she was looking along the length of Samantha's slim, muscular legs. Idly she was comparing them to Willow's: they had far better muscle tone - - but then Samantha was a Slayer, Willow just a collegian. On the other hand Samantha's skin lacked the honey-fudge tone of Willow's,thanks to the gentle caresses of the California sun (and Buffy's hands, and cocoa butter tan cream and . )

Buffy came back to consciousness (from a reverie as to which would taste nicer, Samantha or Willow, skin nicely sun-heated, prone, perhapson a towel, and perhaps with ice-cream or cotton candy as a condiment) to realise that Giles and Elspeth had returned.

"I think that we very likely have an extremely dangerous situation here," Giles said, without preamble. "How has the research gone ?"

"The Lucovore," (Giles had, as usual, fallen into 'lecture' mode, even though presumably Elspeth Jennings, at the least, would have been familiar with his theme) "as Willow perceptively said, is a devourer of light. To be more precise, that is one of the chief ways by which one may knowthat one is . facing . one."

"Nicely phrased," Buffy said, dryly: "I think I have one, maybetwo, of my college lecturers who can wrap things up as smoothly . not !"

"Willow," Giles pressed on, ignoring his protégéé (while Samantha looked adoringly at the Slayer-regnante), "the Rite of the Dark Voracious ?"

"Oh - yes - nasty, urgh, incredibly evil - hearts torn out, virgin sacrifices - evil demons - the Lucovore are in there, but there are worse, too. Could almost be what's happening here - "

"Almost ?" Xander asked: "You mean that, for once, we've come in before the very worst situation ?"

"Well, according to this - " Willow twisted the book round "- Pursuivant: Cults of the Final Desecration - for the full Dark Voracious ritual, you need a Master of at least the Nineteenth Degree, who has committedhimself to Utter Evil irrevocably."

"Oh, my G-" Elspeth said.

"Exactly," Giles chimed in: "Quentin Travers has passed the Twenty-Third Degree, hasn't he ?"
