Fic: A Chance of A Lifetime ch3+4

Chapter 3: The Old and The New

Sunnydale looked like any other small town. The had the impression it
was one of those towns that rolled the streets up at night. You know
the kind I'm talking about. Sunnydale had that feel to it. The only
thing that was remotly odd about the town was that it seemed to have a
lot of churces and graveyards.

The first thing I did when I got there was check out the local
highschool. Well the second thing really. The first thing I did was
find out the first highschool had been blown up, on Graduation Day of
all things. I heard about Senior Classes giving gifts to a school,
but this is a bit much. Well at least I found out where the arson
charges came from.

Well at the new Sunnydale Highschool I managed to get in a few
quesions before the Principal found out I was a reporter and kindly
asked me to leave. Basically he knew nothing except that the great
Cordelia Chase had been born and bread in Sunnydale CA. But I already
knew that.

Now I bet you think I left, right.....Ha you're catching on. I might
of left his office but I didn't leave the school. I mean really, in
this day and age he really should have had me escorted out. THere's
no telling what trouble a girl like me can get into.

Well I ended up in the school library. Now why would I go there you
might be asking? Well I was hoping they would have school yearbooks
and maybe if I was really really lucky, I could find out where one of
them lived, or worked, or did time. I was grasping at straws here.

"May I help you young lady?"

I jumped. Young lady. Oh wait the man looked to be at least a
hundred. I mean I'm not THAT young.

"Oh i'm sorry. I was looking for a book."

"Oh yes, you must be the new student." The man walked past me and
headed for a ladder, "I will get the books for you. Now let me see...
Oh yes. Your history book should be in the history section. We used
to have a bigger collection of books, but the old librarian, a Mr.
Giles or something took many of them with him. At least those that
survived the fire of the old school."

Mr Giles? Could he be talking about the man in the files I was
carrying. A Rupert Giles. AKA Ripper suspected of arson, murder, and
multiple assault charges. That Mr. Giles.

"What happened to the old librarian?" I asked.

"Well I'm not quite sure." The man turned toward me and then
continued to look for a book I was beginning to believe didn't exist,
"I believe he bought out that occult shop about four years ago. I
think he still owns it."

"Occult shop?"

"Yes." The man dissapeared behind a shelf, "I believe it's called the
Magic Box."

That was all i needed to know. I can just imagine that old man find
the book and being all happy only to find he lost the student he was
supposed to give it too. I know I should feel bad about lying to the
old guy but I had more important things to worry about. Like why was
a man who had degrees up to ying yang working as a libraian and then
as a shop owner.

This just did not make sense.

Chapter 4: And By Magic

The occult shop was exactly what I thought it would be. Mr. Giles
however wasn't. I had expected... well I'm not exactly sure what I
expected but it wasn't what I got. Here was a pretty sexy man with
brains to boot, who owned his own business. He seemed to
be....well.... damn he was hot.

After a few minutes of looking around he asked me if I needed any
help. I told him who I was and I watched him get all nervouse and
sweaty. It was actually fun. I always love when that happens.

"So what...d..do you want to ask me?"

"I am doing a background peice on Cordelia Chase and I wanted to talk
to the people who knew her best."

"ANd you're asking me?" The man seemed surprised.

"Yes, I asked around and I was told that you spent quite a lot of time
around each other."

"Well yes we did." The man smiled, "Cordelia is a fine girl. I've
seen some of her movies. They are quite good, actually."

"Yes they are." I smiled too, "Is there anything you can tell me
about her?"

"Cordelia was always a very popular girl. She liked the spotlight,
but..." Mr. paused for a moment, "when she had to choose between the
spotlight and matters of the heart, she chose the heart, even though
it cost her deeply."

I was intrigued, "What do you mean?"

Mr. Giles smiled, "I'm not sure I should tell you anymore without
Cordelia's permission."

I was about to lie and tell him I had Cordelia's permission when a
young woman came out of the back room.

"Hey Giles what do you want me to do with the wart of toad?"

"Oh Anya, put it with the bat wings."

"Yeah sure." ANya put what she was carrying away, "I'm going to get
going to Willow's club and then Xander and I are going to have sex."

I watched as Mr. Giles' face turned an odd shade of red. Then I
smiled, I had a second peice to the puzzle. I had some quesions I
wanted to ask Willow. One of which was why she never graduated from
College even though she had a 4.0 GPA. And another was why she was a
suspect in a grizzly murder.

TBC.
