SUBTERFUGE (21/?)
"Three weeks," he repeated quietly, finally looking back at her. "Why didn't
you say anything sooner?"
"At first, I planned to tell Buffy," she said, wrapping the thread around her
finger, "she and I got in a fight, though, that night. The next day, I didn't
think it was that important."
"Not important?" he sputtered, "Willow, you had a date with a hell God who
told you that she wanted you to be the cure for her boredom and you think
this is unimportant?"
"I thought she was just talking," Willow said, wishing he could understand,
"you know, trying to scare me to get to Buffy. I never thought I'd see her
again."
"But you have," he said, shaking his head. "Willow, how many times have you
seen her?"
"Three or four," Willow said, drawing her bottom lip into her mouth. "I
thought it was just a game when she found me. I knew that Buffy would be mad
at me for not telling her sooner, so I decided that I'd deal with it alone. I
thought that if I resisted, Glory would leave me alone. She's been following
me, Giles. I've seen her outside watching the house. She told me that she's
found herself rather obsessed with me. She cornered me the other day, and um,
well, she..."
"Yes, I get the idea," Giles said, his eyes closing. "Willow, I don't know
what to say. I can't believe you kept this from us for so long. As you said,
nothing can change what happened. We just need to find a way out of this
mess."
"You're angry with me," she said softly.
"I love you, Willow," he said, choosing his words delicately, "you were
trying to help, and that is commendable. But, by not being honest with us,
you've put yourself in a very dangerous situation."
"I know," Willow whispered.
"May I ask, what finally made you come to me?" he asked, knowing there was
something else that Willow had not told him.
"I can't do it alone," she admitted, "I tried and it all got so out of
control. It's all my fault and now there may be nothing that I can do to stop
it."
"Have you told Buffy, yet?" he asked quietly.
"No," she shook her head. "It's so complicated. Glory seems to think that
Buffy and I are um involved. You know, more than friendly like."
"What has she said?" he asked.
"It's not what she's said, it's what she's done," Willow said, guilt on her
face as she continued, "last night, she sent me flowers with a card that told
me to get ready, that it was almost time. She put poison on the thorns,
Giles. She almost killed Buffy last night because of me. Buffy's still in bed
recovering from the poison, and she has no idea what really happened. She
thinks it is some sort of illness. Glory called and told me that it was a
warning, that next time, it would be real." She felt a fresh wave of tears in
her eyes as she whispered, "Buffy almost died, and it's all my fault."
