Ahem. I don't want to defend what Joss is doing with one of my
favorite fictional characters. I'm still miffed about the deaths of
Buffy and Joyce. Now Willow is going over to the dark side! I suspect
Joss is giving us an allegorical story of drug or alcohol addiction.
In this case, Willow has gotten drunk on the sense of power she feels
when she uses magic. (In police work, this is called being "badge
happy" or the "Wyatt Errp Syndrome". In the military, it is called
being "rank happy.")
Sad to say, it makes sense. Willow has always had self-esteem issues.
We thought the confidence she had shown in recent seasons came from her
friendships ---- but it is obvious now that she has been using magic as a
crutch.
Resurrecting Buffy could only have made her feel more powerful. I know
some of you think this is all out of character for Willow, but let's
remember a few past episodes. Remember the time she accidentally cast
a spell that made Spike and Buffy fall in love and made Giles blind?
She did that because she was jealous of the time Buffy was spending
with Spike! As a result of that stunt, she was offered a chance to
become a demon ---- because she had indeed done an evil act.
I'll close with an awful joke. "The difference between a drunk and a
junkie is this: they'll both steal your wallet ---- but a junkie will
help you look for it."
A power-drunk witch might just go further. And if anyone remembers
Vamp Willow, you know our sweet little friend has a seriously sadistic
side that she has so far kept on a very short leash.
I only hope the friendships of the Scoobies can be restored somehow ----
although I suspect Willow might have to wait until late in Season 7 (if
there is one) to redeem herself. (Frankly, I'm a little more
frightened of what she'll do to herself when she regains her senses
than I am of what she'll do when she's evil.)
And of course, a lot of what happens to Willow depends on the career
plans of the actress who portrays er.
