Re: :: OT; a theory regarding Buffy's current state

Greetings Yoshi...and All!

I'll see your Buffy theory and raise ya a Willow! <wink> LOL This is a rare occurence for me...I'm 'going public' and joining a discussion! (And I promise to refrain from too much navel gazing...tho' it's really a rather nice one...even if I do say so meself. <wink>) So, 'Hallelujah and pass the hotcakes,' this is a genuine de-lurk! (Okay, so maybe not everyone is as joyous about this as me. <wink>)(But feel free to have some hotcakes...theirquite nice.) Okies...enough with the lame jocularity...onto the wonderfulworld of theorizing!

Into the breach we go! <wink>

Well, like they say, opinions are like belly buttons; everybody has one, and too many people meditate on them. Well, here's my opinion. Spoilers for season six, especially "Bargaining".

Still here?

Yip! LOL <snip!>

The spell that brought Buffy back wasn't completed. Remember, the biker demons broke the urn that was such an integral component of the spell before Willow could complete it. I believe that, as a result, part of Buffy's soul is missing. She still has her emotional capacity, her memories(of bothsides of the Veil), but the emotional connections she feels for her friends aren't there.

I say that a portion of her soul is missing... <snip!>

This is a wonderful theory and it really makes a lot of sense to me! My Willow theory also deals with the (involuntarily) aborted spell and broken urn. My feeling has been: to resurrect Buffy, Wills invoked Osiris...Egyptian God of the Dead and the Netherworlds. He's the principal cause of human resurrection, capable of giving life after death, 'cos he'd "been there, done that." The big "O" has a reputation for being resurrected by women, most notably by his wife/sister Isis (what is it with deities and incest? And "O" boinked, and sired kids, with more than one of his...Talk about a nightmare of a gene pool! <shudder>). At any rate, Isis was a powerful enchantress...what Willow is well on her way to becoming. My (perhaps over thought) theory is that Osiris is lingering within Willow...the spell was not finished thus his summoning not properly ended and he released. He may well still be hanging about within her and looking to fashion himself another ultra-powerful galpal...or get in touch with his own 'feminine side!' <wink> Just a thought...but her uncharacteristic moments of self conceit and addictive "power tripping" is rather reminiscent of the "God Syndrome" (as well as the other syndromes that have been previously mentioned).

And as an aside, I'm totally loving that this is giving Aly a chance to really stretch those acting abilities...and she is a phenomenal actress. Really enjoy the thought of more plotlines that spotlight her, in spite of the disturbing direction the character is seemingly headed. "Good" or "Evil"she's a joy to watch. :-)

Now, I make the following predictions, without benefit of any future spoilers, for the remainder of the season;

<snip!> Love your theories and I really hope that this is how things will turn out because it'd make for some fantastic viewing!

As you may have guessed, I subscribe to the addiction theory of Willow's current condition. Somehow makes more sense than simply 'Willow's gone evil', and fits with Joss's love for using supernatural storylines as metaphors for real human issues. Plus, it gives Willow a better chance for recovery toward the end of the season. She'll be changed, but she'll be better for it in the long run.

I agree wholeheartedly as I did with Chazbook's mention of Joss' love of allegory. Willow is on a "power high"...a genuine addiction. I must also agree with whomever had noted that having Tara berate her now for casual magic ala the party decorations, basically saying "why use magic for things that you can attain naturally." Well...what about "fiat lux?" Back in Season 4, Tara was way impressed with Will's little SHS-ruins light show...no complaints then or saying, "hey, quit it, we should go back and get a 'natural sourcin' flashlight'!" <wink> Nope, nope, nope:
TARA: How'd you do that? With the light?

WILLOW: Oh, you know. You taught me.

TARA: I taught you teeny Tinkerbell light.

WILLOW: Okay, so I ... tinkered with the Tinkerbell. It was easy. And besides, isn't this better than ... using a flashlight like some kind of doofus?

Okay so this bit also, and admittedly, clues us in to Will's love of no longer being the "underdog/geek/doofus," thanks to her magical ability. Sheexcels at it and it elevates her, from the very bottom of the social ladder, all the way up above the "masses" (as she spoke more of in the Halloweenepi). But it also show's that Joss has been devolping her storyline for years now, gotta admit, I'm eager to see where it goes. <grin>

As to some of the other, more "aggressive" changes in Will's character that we've seen (and Tara's as well), I feel that part of this is due to the switch to a new network that isn't nearly as censoring as the WB was. Whooie! The gay jokes are flying:

Anya: So, do you play 'shiver me timbers?'

Tara: I'm not really into the timber.

(Or something close to that, <wink>) And in addition to that we have loads more PDA and such. And even Buffy's getting in on the act, some wicked double entendres and sly word play upon certain sex related expletives! LOL

As for the rest of the Halloween epi...Dawn's little death flirtation thang was a bit upsetting...especially in light of:

"Dawn, the hardest thing in this world ... is to live in it ... Be brave. Live ... For me."

So, what...? Now that Buffy's done the "return to the land of the living thang" the whole 'cherish and live life' words of wisdom are chucked out the proverbial window? Rather undermines and downright diminishes that powerful moment... least it does for me. But then, Dawn's meant to be a 'typical' 14/15 year old...she's gonna do some nonsensically stupid things and hopefully learn from them. (If she doesn't get herself killed first!) <wink>

But hey, what about Buffy's fab "Jackie Chan-esque" fight scenes! Way togo with the innovative, "weaponary-use" of handy dandy nearby objects! The car door bit with one of the vamps was pure Jackie! <grin> Loved it! :-)

Okies...I'll "shush" with the rambling now. I'll conclude this with: personally, I prefer to take the "In Joss We Trust" approach. He's astounded and amazed me for 5+ seasons now...and his storyarcs have unfolded over years. With him, nothing is insignificant... there's a "master plan" and I'm eager to watch it unfold even more. :-)

Have a good one all!
