Re: Essay: The Decline of B/W Fan Fiction]
Ok, I wasn't going to say anything on this subject but i thought i'd add my 2
pence.
I personally have nothing against C&C (if you look at any of the snippets
i've posted I actually ask for any and all types of feedback, as i would like
help in improving the small amount of writing skills that I have) and I have
agreed with almost everything that has been said on this subject except
one....public C&C.
While I do agree that C&C in general helps improve a writer (or scare them
off), I strongly believe that all feedback, whether good or bad, is between
the person giving feedback and the writer. As a rule, all feedback that I
send out is OFF list because I see it as personal.
When you post on list you share it with the 800ish people who also subscribe,
not just the author. If you scrutinise his/her work, you are scrutinising it
in front of everyone. Some people, myself included, have to muster the
courage to post in the first place. And C&C can sometimes come across as
'public humiliation' if posted on list.
So all of you, please, just think about what you are going to say and whether
it will help the author in any way to have your comments in the public eye.
Authors ... if you don't want it on list then say so on the feedback section
on your header, if you prefer/don't mind it on list then also say so. That
way your preferences are made clear to the reader.
Only my opinion,
Cheryl
