It's not just you--depressed Buffy has made for depressing "Buffy", as
opposed to better years, when her heartbreaks were still thrilling
television.

And yes the "Angel" plot is moving nicely. I loved "Couplet", and
considering how I loathed "Fredless" and "Birthday", I think "Loyalty"
is about as good as I can expect from Mere Smith.
