You're not making it up, I mentioned it as well. It seemed like they were trying to play it as if there was still tension between them, but SMG and AH's chemistry shot that idea to hell. Instead came of as an almost sexual tension, and I'm not just saying that b/c I'm a B/W shipper, either. They seemed sort of "akward" around each other, and if you throw that in with the veiled compliments, meaningful looks, and big confessions, and you get a subtextual stew.
<<OTOH, I think it paradoxically helps to explain Joyce's S1-2 cluelessness. That is, saying that Joyce and Hank "forgot" reinforces how implausible it was that they didn't know. You know? >>
You know, I thought about this after the ep as well. At first that whole thing came off as sort of a "neccessary evil" in the plot hole department, but now, it makes it seem very clear. And being that I just saw the "I'm a Slayer" confrontation scene on FX, it makes her reaction make sense. Buffy asking her how she COULDN'T notice, and Joyce saying "This stops now."
