Re: OT New Marti Noxon Interview. *Possible Spoilers*
Cas,
I
don't
think
there
were
any
spoilers,
but
this
format
is
MY
addiction :)
Two things that could be significant (and possibly worrisome):
Marti sez:
>I do think the Willow/Buffy parallel is the strongest arc of the season
Y'know, it's a little late in the season for "parallel", and since Buffy
didn't come back "wrong" and they're apparently not doing any further
exploration of "heaven", I'm starting to get concerned that this isn't
"parallel stories that prove to be parts of a greater whole", but rather
"compare and contrast" and that Marti's going to punish Willow for her
addiction to stand as a counterpoint to Buffy beating hers. This would
be dispiriting because 1) I love Willow, 2) Buffy appears to have
already beaten her addiction (no more Spike-boinkage and it looks like
she's licked the misery-wallowing) so any "that could have been me"
stuff with Will would seem rather pointless now, and 3) Willow was the
one who was honest and faced her problems, why should she be the one
being punished? (other than that it's Buffy's show, I mean?)
At this point, I would really prefer it if Marti was talking about Buffy
and Willow's "story" rather than "stories".
The other thing is, Marti sez:
>We usually end on some sort of cliffhanger
No, you don't! BtVS has been a leader in moving a way from the
old-fashioned cliff-hanger, in favor of the "resolution that sets up new
questions". Michael Hickerson, who knows sci-fi TV better than I, says
that these sort of wrap-ups were a tradition of "ST: Deep Space Nine"
whereas "ST: The Next Generation" did the traditional "OMG! The
Enterprise is firing on Captain Picard's Borg ship! What's going to
happen now? See you in September" type of thing.
Hopefully Marti was referring to the way this show usually ends seasons.
Yes, Buffy dying or running away keeps you waiting for next year, but
it's the end of a story (in a way that makes you wonder how they're
going to tell the next one). The LAST thing this slooooow, deadly
season needs is a no-resolution, "climax interruptus" cliff-hanger. I
want "addictions and depression" off the plate by the end of ep 22. One
year of this stuff was plenty, thank you.
Move on from "I'm 21 and adrift because Marti was adrift at 21, never
mind that I've spent the past five years as a world-saving hero with a
strong sense of purpose and making me live out Marti Noxon's college
dramas is a forced regression and character assassination" to "OMG! I
just realized I'm in love with my best friend!" or whatever next year's
story is going to be.
