Spike aimed the gun at an imaginary assailant. "So, your grand plan
is... You walk up to the Slayer and shoot her dead?"
Dru grinned. "Slayer go away and we can be together as a family..."
She started to dance whimsically.
"What is it with you and families, love?" Spike shook his head. "Its
not like us vampires can have children or anything... Well, except as
lunch." He grinned.
"Angel has a baby," Dru sighed. "Darla's baby... Poor Darla... Ashes
to ashes..."
Spike took Dru's hands and danced with her. "That's just bloody
perfect!" He danced a little more. "Fatherhood," he mused. "That guy
knows so many ways to get sucked into Hell..."

"Tara?" Buffy's eyes widened.
Dawn nodded. "Yes, I was in love with her..." Tears welled up, and
Buffy realised just how grief-stricken her little sister really
was. "Oh Dawn... I'm so sorry... I didn't realise..." Buffy rose out
of her chair, and the two sisters embraced.
"Wass 'appenin'?" Xander asked as he groggily entered the kitchen.
He saw Buffy and Dawn hugging tightly. "Oh," he back-pedalled. "I'll
jus' be..."
As he left the kitchen, despite the grief and sorrows, Buffy and
Dawn burst into laughter.

It was a sombre welcoming committee that met Quentin Travers off
the airplane. At least until they saw Rupert Giles following him.
"Giles!" Buffy ran into his arms, almost sending the bedraggled
Watcher flying. "God, I've missed you."
"Yes," Giles pontificated. "I'm happy to see you too." He looked up
at the other scoobs. "Where's Anya?" he asked. "Looking after our
profits?" His smile faded as he saw the expressions. "Oh..."
"Let's talk in the car," Buffy said.

*

The car journey seemed to last no time at all for Buffy, and an
eternity for Xander. Buffy spelled out what'd happened since Giles'
leaving, and the two elder men asked few questions and listened
intently.
"You've been through a lot," Giles commiserated, brooding over the
loss of Tara.
"Yes, a lot." Quentin stared thoughtfully at the Slayer. "You have
my heartfelt sympathies... All of you."
As he exited the car, he seemed infinitely older, as if the weight
of the world was upon his shoulders.

*

"He's so cute!" Drusilla exclaimed as she saw the dog-eared
demon, "Can we keep him?"
"Clem?" Spike stared at her. "Why would you want to, pet? he's
probably got fleas..."
Clement came over and held out his hand. "Hiya!"
Spike shook it reluctantly. "Did you get what I asked for?"
"Yes," Clem replied. "And it'll cost you more than kittens, this
time!"
Spike nodded, lighting up a cigarette. "I'm good for it." He stared
into the distance thoughtfully. "Hell, I'm always good for it."

*

"You didn't have to come all the way here, you know," Buffy said as
she brought a tray of tea and coffee into the living room.
Quentin smiled at her. "You know how we prefer to work, my dear;
face-to-face," he responded carefully.
"Except when you're planting daggers in our backs," Xander mumbled.
"It saves misunderstandings and misinterpretations that way,"
Quentin continued, as if he hadn't heard.
Willow sidled in to join them, and Buffy gave her a loving smile
noticed by everyone except Quentin. Giles raised an eyebrow. Things
had certainly changed in his absence, he noted.
"So," Quentin said, "How exactly can the Watcher's Council assist
you?"

End Part 6.
