As much talent as I think SMG has, I don't think she's been showing it so 
much this year. I think Dan had mentioned a while back that she seems to 
pick one direction in a scene and stick with it the entire time, no matter if 
the situation changes midway or not. Of course the tone from those scenes 
didn't really shift all that much. The script made it seem that Buffy's 
focus was all about Willow. And I got that from the episode. But not as 
strongly as I got it from the script :(
