Hell, Spike could get rid of the chip by attaching a set of jumper cables to
a couple of power lines and sticking them to either side of his head. It
would knock him out, but he'd get over it. Vampires can't die from
electrocution. Microchips can. If he had half a brain he could have gotten
rid of that thing an hour after he realized it was there. For that matter,
it could simply be cut out, by anyone with a knife. That surgeon not being
able to remove it made no sense. Just grab it and yank stupid. The brain
damage, no matter how extensive, would heal. The crushed spine in season
two did. Vampire people. Not permanently damaged by things that would kill
or cripple a human. Not that hard to get something out of his brain. As a
plot device, that chip has always really annoyed the engineer in me.
