Re: Kirayoshi onSeason Finale and FIC-- *DISCUSSION*
Just my luck, my WebTV went fritzo and swallowed my initial reply.
Crap. Although now I do get to mention the fic
which
was
very
good
I
must
say,
and
not
just
to stall for space...
But I don't agree that Willow can be a worthwhile character again, or
that "everyone loses their innocence". Willow killed a human being, for
an unnecessary petty revenge. (Warren was going to jail; California
has the death penalty; multiple shootings are a "special circumstance"
that makes him eligible.)
Yes, Angel and Faith are interesting characters, but they aren't Willow
(they are the Fallen seeking Redemption, and the Warrior who ignores her
calling and suffers for it, respectively). I'm interested in Angel's
journey to be at peace with himself, but he's not what Buffy is trying
to protect, he is not her Holy Cause.
Willow was. Willow is the Innocent, the Good that needs protecting. By
tarnishing her, Marti soils all humanity; we're all just killers,
waiting to pull the trigger. And if no one is ever truly Good, if we'd
all gladly murder (should circumstance and Marti Noxon will it), what is
the point of Buffy's battles? No Good=No Evil=No Point=No Drama.
If this is just a planet of murderers, then Buffy should take up surfing
and let the vamps eat them.
I know, Marti wanted to say that no one is any more moral than Spike, so
it'll be okay when Buffy marries her rapist in the series finale, but
I'm going to miss that one.
Plus, this makes Willow so dull. (I know, I've said it before, but
apparently I haven't convinced people, so I'm just going to be
repetitive.) From now on, it won't be "how will Willow handle the plot
twist of the week?", it'll be "will this make her kill again?" And,
eventually she will. Probably for February sweeps, or whenever Marti
runs out of ideas. Oh, wait, that was this year. Boring.
Last year, Xander couldn't murder Ben to save the world. Willow
couldn't even conceive of it. What a difference a year makes.
A hero would never have murdered Warren. Marti killed my hero, and by
association, the other heroes of the Jossverse. Bye-bye.
Where's the Tuesday Night Fights on USA when I need them?
As to the fic, yes, a major reset like this is what it would take (which
won't happen, of course). So that seems to argue against your
hypothesis that Willow can be someone we love without one, btw. Nice to
see Jenny again, though.
But it wasn't Valentine's Day when she died. Saturday, February 14th,
1998, was the Valentine's Day dance in "Bewitched, Bothered and
Bewildered:" The day "Passion" aired, Tuesday, the 24th, is as good a
guess as any for the events of that ep.
I also don't know if Jenny would have told Willow what she was doing.
She seemed to be working hard to hide it from Giles in the ep.
Still, I look forward to what's ahead. I'm certain changing history
will be a lot tougher than Willow anticipated. (Ever read "Replay", by
Ken Grimwood? Pretty good book, although lacking an ending, IMO.)
But, hey, if she can save Kendra, she kills two birds with one stone,
and they don't have to worry about all the Faith stuff.
Personally, I think Willow should tell Buffy everything (and I mean
EVERYthing). It may not be the right decision, but I just want to see
you write that scene.
Looking forward to more, and let me know if next year is any good, okay?
Dan
BTW, who's with me on the "that's it, I'm done with this show" thing?
