Joachim,

I think that even if writers feel that Season Sux was less than stellar,
there's a temptation to fix things, so we'll get a certain amount of
current fics, regardless of the quality of the eps. Also there's the
thrill of being able to imagine what happens next, the infinitesmal
dream that Joss might be thinking the exact same things you are as you
write.

That said, there's a good amount of fics set in past seasons available.
Just a few off the top of my head:

Mad Hamlet's recent works all diverge from Season 4's "Beer Bad"

Red Willow's "Still Struggling" is also set in Season 4

Jenny Dapper's work is set in (a slightly alternate) Season 3

The Bear's "Seeing Red" and its predecessor (its name fell out of the
hole in my head, sorry) is set in Season 2

And I'm sure there's many more for you to find.

(Oh, and some ditz who moderates this list wrote a Season 4 fluff piece
that people seemed to like. And The Bear shouldn't be upset about my
forgetting the name of his fic because I've just managed to forget **my
own title**!! Okay, I've got it now; it's called Later [Can't Come
Soon Enough For Me]. Yeesh.)
