Re: FF: Eternal Love [1-2/?]
Angela,
First of all, it's incredibly hard to resist using a "suck" joke, but
let me try. I'll just say that this fic certainly does not suck.
Liked the picture of an older Buffy, a little more worn, occasionally
bingeing on the cigarettes and beer (Faith was a bad influence, wasn't
she?) and running off to see Angel for her periodic escapes from
Sunnydale. Nice prescience, btw, with Buffy having financial problems
because the Slayer can't really hold a job. (And I already like this fic
better than "Doublemeat Palace", to no one's surprise, I'm sure.)
Liked the skewering of the cliche, where Buffy confesses her love when
Willow is injured--only Willow never hears it and Buffy goes right back
into the closet :) (At least Willow heard Xander in "Becoming, Part 2",
even if she thought it was the wrong guy.) And the flashback to the
Matagrin demon battle looks interesting.
Liked all the details of the broken bone (except the break coming
through the skin--ew!), from Buffy's refusal to go to the hospital, to
being stubborn about pumping the gas, to playing on Will's pity to get
permission to smoke, to the scene with Giles setting the break.
Enjoyed both the depiction of Willow in full babble mode, and her
recognition that Buffy only does the same thing under certain
circumstances. Good dialogue, generally.
And lastly, a personal preference note. I'm quite thrilled to see a
story featuring only the classic characters, without any of the new
S.O.s we've been seeing the last few years. In fact, aside from Faith
and Jenny Calendar, you pretty much have every regular character I ever
liked in this one. Besides, it's nice to see the original Scoobies
still working together, just the four of them. (Not since "Primeval",
really. *sigh*)
In short (well, kinda--at least when compared to my last post), I liked
this fic quite a bit. I would enjoy seeing more.
Dan
PS--Forgot to mention, I like seeing Angel still in love with Buffy.
Dramatically speaking, with his own series, he can't remain static like
that, but realistically (yes, I am aware of the irony), what's a decade
of loving Buffy, even after their breakup, to an eternal vampire? He'll
move on when she's gone, not before.
