does anyone know if the shock of witnessing a
traumatic event could cause someone to become mute?
the answer is maybe... sometimes if a young child is brutally raped, or
witnesses something horrific like seeing a parent murdered, they won't speak
for a very long time... now whether this is actually being "mute" is
debatable... since that seems to conclude they *physically* can't speak as
opposed to having a physical reaction to something psychological, like a
defense, or a breakdown of sorts.
When i was in the 4th grade, my friend keith witnessed his stepfather shoot
his mother, ending in her death... he didn't speak for about 2 years,
literally never talked... he even created little signs to communicate... he
absolutely wouldn't talk... and even after lots of therapy got him talking
again... he was never the same. He missed a lot of school and eventually his
grandmother took hiim home to homeschool him until he came back in the 8th
grade...
someone correct me if i'm wrong... but i believe maya angelou was raped as
a child and didn't speak for years either...
hope that helps,
RW

Willow: Oh Buffy, you really need to have every square inch of your ass kicked.
Buffy: Then show me what you got, and I'll show you what a Slayer really is.
