I agree whole-heartedly. However, going strictly by the show can be 
sticky too. Though you can see Buffy's name as BUFFY in 1x08 - I 
Robot... You Jane when the records are pulled up, which would be a 
good indication that "Buffy" is her legal name, they couldn't even 
get her birth year right in that ep (showed up as 1980 and 1981). 
The police, at least when they were arresting her for Kendra's murder 
in season 2, called her Buffy, but they were informed by principal 
Snyder so he could have called her "Buffy" and until they checked, 
the police would just assume it was her legal name. On her tomb 
stone in 5x22 - The Gift and 6x01 - Bargaining it reads Buffy Anne 
Summers. Now, I don't know the laws of name changing and how legal 
the tomb stone has to be in reflecting a persons name, but if they 
were going to go through the trouble of including her Middle Name, 
I'd think they'd use her legal first name as well.

Regardless, however, Joyce and Buffy clearly prefer Buffy above any 
other name and to assume that Buffy would be called by anything else, 
even on "special events" is kind of like spitting in their faces. 
That's my opinion at least.
