Re: Magic and hypothermic poultry, ethics
Who, me?
All I'm saying is that if we CAN all just get along (see the wonderful
work of Maggie Walsh and Buffy's Vampire-Rehab-Through-Sex program) then
Buffy seems like a callous bitch for constantly offing the poor,
darling, perfectly-integratable-into-society vampires. I don't see how
"fighting a war" against creatures that **aren't** actually evil allows
Buffy to dust vampires that haven't attacked anyone ("Out of My Mind",
"As You Were") or have been rendered helpless and would thus be
candidates for the same peaceful coexistence Spike currently enjoys
("When She Was Bad", "Into The Woods", and arguably "Lessons" [and by
implication, all of them]). I don't want to see a show where "War" is
the excuse for murdering the opposition, including "noncombatants" and
"prisoners", but no attempt is ever made to end the war by those whom
we're supposed to have a rooting interest in. Especially since the bad
guys aren't actually bad in this theorem.
As for your "vampires really are their old human selves" theory, it is
interesting, but it does contradict several thousand years of canon.
Yes, you can argue that the experts are wrong, and stupid, and victims
of their own prejudices, and anything's possible, etc., but absent any
evidence on your side, I just consider that to be Flat Earth Society
style "logic". Ad hominem attacks on the Watchers' Council do not make
me decide that things are entirely different from everything we've been
told. For example, there have been scenes where we saw that Angel's
soul was physically separate from the demon-ridden body ("Becoming"
[both parts]) and where we saw that a demon *does* exist within his
body, entirely separate from who he is/was ("The Dark Age", "Through the
Looking Glass"). So I'm quite comfortable with the vampire=human body
(including memories)-soul+demon equation and see no reason to assume
that Spike is a reprogrammed William, and not, as both told and shown, a
demon using William's body and stored brain cells.

heading back to finish reviewing the ep at a decent hour (I've got a job
to get to these days!)
