I don't know if anyone else has covered this, but... it's Jewish custom to leave stones in lieu of flowers. The custom is based in the idea that flowers die, fade, and blow away, but that the stones are permanent. There's no official prohibition on Jews leaving flowers, but many Jews don't do it because it's a Christian tradition and they want to distinguish themselves. IMO, I thought the writers did some good research on this one.
