Re: FF: Guaitiao
Hmm, a Taino-named fic, arriving right after Columbus Day. Strangely
appropriate...
Yes, that's quite good for a first effort. I particularly liked how,
after introducing Nikki and her amazing powers, you immediately
humanized her by showing her at home beset by her cats. Heh. That and
the bit where she's semi-insomniac did a real good job of making her a
full-fledged character, as did the later bit of her paying for Isis's
breakage. I'm now very intrigued by Nikki.
Indeed, Isis appears to be quite the scamp. As a fan of the old "Star
Trek" episode "Assignment: Earth" I'm raising an eyebrow at her (in
approved Spockian fashion), but I'll wait to see if I'm right about
that.
I did find it a little out of character (oh, shh, Ida!) that Buffy would
just let Nikki walk out of the store without getting answers. It seemed
more like you, the author, let her go because you knew that Natasha
would be able to fill Buffy in about Nikki. The only thing is that
there's no way Buffy would know that. (Don't feel bad--professional
BtVS writers do the same thing. I'm still annoyed that David Fury had
"Grave" end with Buffy having her "Summers Dawn" moment [?DEM] despite
not knowing if Willow, Xander and Giles were alive, especially since
Anya had previously told her that Giles was dying.)
OTOH, I thought Buffy and Willow were wonderfully in character when
their main focus everytime the subject of Nikki comes up is the word
"mate". I could absolutely see the mutual freakouts (and subconscious
fear of exposure) playing across their faces. Very funny.
And your main plot seems rife with possibilities.
All in all, I loved it and definitely want to see more. (And you said
you couldn't write! Ha!)
Thanks,
Dan
