Actually I took lessons from Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Katherine Rusch.
I attended a writers conference that they held at a local science-fiction
collection a few years back, and one of the things they discussed was the
seven points of popular fiction;
1) Establish the setting.
2) Establish the character.
3) The character has a problem.
4) The character tries to solve the problem.
5) The character fails to solve the problem. Things get worse.(repeat
steps 4 and 5 ad nauseum)
6) The character makes a final attempt to solve the problem, risking
losing everything.
7) Validation and tying up of loose ends.

Right now we're in the cycle of parts 4 and 5. The next and final chapter
will cover 6 and 7. Trust me, I know what I'm doing.

(you're buying that, right?)
