Re: :SPOILERS For next week's ep. plus rambling
My rambling -and boy is it rambling-2 cents worth on Willow's
sexuality.
I love Willow.
I'm a lesbian.
I love that Willow likes having sex with girls.
I loved W/T.
I'd love a canon B/W-ship but I don't think it will happen.
I'd love a canon F/W-ship and I THINK we might at least get
some subtext, if not more, this season.
THAT SAID, I also loved Willow/Oz and especially the neurotic
complexity that was Willow / Xander.
I think that Willow is truly bi-sexual - and I still love her.
I think it' s sad that ME has gone from being truly daring and
showing a "real" lesbian relationship to being cowed into the
WILLOW IS GAY NOW corner by the kittens or by the idea of
politcal correctness or by fear of losing market share (probably
closer to the truth) or by the fact that this is the last season, let's
play it safe and not tinker with the formula or by WHATEVER.
Obviously bisexuality is far more far more complex to get across
to a prime time TV audience than homosexuality. It's not black
and white, and it's far more threatening to most people than
homosexuality.
All the more reason for ME to try to do it, in my opinion. It would
be daring and brave and audacious, and most importantly, it
would be true to the character that they've created over six years.
BUT, to ME's credit, it looks like it is the last season and they
have a lot of story lines to tie up. AND it wouldn't be easy. Just
think - while it's "ok" to show naked Buffy and Spike f**cking their
brains out over and over in prime time tv, even literally bringing a
house down, it's "not ok" to show Willow and Tara doing the
same. We had to to wait two years to see them semi-naked in
bed. And I don't think that's all ME's fault. If Willow was allowed to
be bisexual, would we see her having naked hot sex with a guy,
then having metaphorical spell/sex, or chaste, covered up sex,
with a woman? Would that be satisfying to anyone? Would that
just open up a whole other can of worms?
I don't know all that's going to happen in Him but from what I've
seen in the clip at Vidiot.com, the whole ep is one of those light
farce filler eps they tend to slip in between two heavier eps, so
no matter what happens, i doubt it's going to make much of a
serious statement.
Personallly, I'm far more squicked out by Buffy the guidance
counselor straddling a teenage boy than I am by ME trying to
force Willow into finding a "hey but I'm GAY NOW so he has to
be turned into a woman" solution.
