Some people use mail filters in a manner other than that.

IE I filter by "Sender" so that the messages from the mailing list like this
one get sent to separate folders. Rather than just dumped into the "inbox"
and my having to find them. The number of messages I get on a daily basis is
always triple digit Frankly I wouldn't even want to read my e-mail if wasn't
sorted. I don't want to have a light bit of fluffy fic right after a major
rant from a discussion group. That's why I have about 50 odd filters in
place based the actual group name each and every yahoo group I'm in gets
sorted before I even read one message... I sort for like things BUFFY_FIC
(This group gets sent to this folder BTW), BTVS_DISCUSSION ,
ASSORTED_FANFIC, RGP, and a few others for things not coved by those. The
"inbox" after the sort is done normally has 10 messages or less in it.
