Man, I haven't seen a mismatch like that since the Rose Bowl! (And I was
routing for WSU!:( ) Angelus would mop the floor with the current-model
Spike.
Which in a roundabout way leads up to my main beef with the whole Buffy/Spike
thing. One of Joss's favorite themes in his shows is redemption. Angel
seeks it every week. Faith chose to serve her sentence in order to achieve
it. In the Gospel According to Buffy, redemption costs. And this is a good
message to get across on the show.
But Spike? He hasn't done anything major since getting his soul back to
merit redemption since he got his soul back, but it looks like he's getting
redemption(in the form of Buffy's love) handed to him on a silver platter!
Where's the price? Why do Angel and Faith have to struggle to atone for
their misdeeds while Spike gets a free ride? Just because he's hot? I made
that comment to Shyfox the other day, and she answered, "Yeah, so was Jeffrey
Dahmer from what I heard, but I wouldn't want to meet him either!"
My prediction for the end of this season on Buffy is as follows(this assumes
that this is the last season); Spike will realize that there is a price tag
for his soul, that he must make a personal sacrifice of some kind. At the
end of the final battle, Buffy will prepare to sacrifice her life(again!) to
defeat the First Evil, but Spike will end up taking the killing blow meant
for Buffy. Thus Spike is redeemed in death, is given a hero's salute and
Buffy mourns. Buffy, Giles, Willow and Dawn then relocate to England where
they become the core of the new Watcher's Council, while Faith, Xander and
the surviving SITs remain in Sunnydale to form a new Scooby Gang to patrol
the Hellmouth, leading to a new series; "Slayers".
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Kirayoshi
who thinks that Spike would currently lose a bout to Spike the bulldog from
the Tom and Jerry cartoons!
